Ran across a RFM in the wild last night and I a glad I did!!!!!

Ran across a RFM in the wild last night and I a glad I did!!!!!

I went to the bay area, ca last night to pick up a Sega Twister (clean) for $1300. It was not ment to be as my ATM card would not work once I got to the LZ. (poor planning on my part!) **or was it :rolleyes: hmm. I have my buddy with me to pass the time on the drive and I also dropped off a PIN to his place from my place...

30 minutes later after leaving the PIN and calling the seller again and saying I would be back today with the cash for the Twister.

But then fate happend. I said to buddy. lets get some pizza as I need a beer at this point. He used his GPS and started calling out Names....
Straw Hat! I say I have not been ta strawht at for 20 years when Pizza took over the 3 that were with in 25 miles of my house in Turlock (1985 or so?) This was all in my head at this point.

He then said Round Table....and I stopped his search and said we are going to Straw Hat. :D

Low and behold a geat looking and playing RFM in the Wild!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never played one at all. After some beers and 5 or so games each I stated that this game is friggin awsome and makes the Sega Twister look like a POS that need to ne PUT out to Paster to live out its crapp life! :D

after a long night and about 2 hours of sleep I am up feeling good and on a friggin quest for a good price on a RFM. Lower price is better for me (not that much free cash over all but.....if I found one or all of these I will get a loan from my DAD as this sould fill out the open spots in what has to be one of the best looking (IMO) mancave within 200 miles. :rolleyes:

Its one heavy pin.. I think its very cool.. Expensive to fix when it dies (monitor to LCD or to replace the computer).

I paid $2200 for mine. It was never operated (Came out of a company break room). I got the ufo kit for it and bill ung installed it for me at cax.. I think if your lucky, you can find one in the $1500-$2500 range.. Good luck!

That price sounds good to me! (for a RFM)

P.S. do you still have a SiniStar Cockpit you would be willing to sell to me? I gave up on rebuilding the one I had and now have a nice UR... I have changed my mind again after getting much closer to the final plan / layout of my Arcade area in my Mancave. I want a friggin Cockpit again.. Going for less games and more holly crap look at that SS cockpit up on that bad ass riser platform :D

Welcome to the Fans of RFM / P2K club!

It is absolutely my favorite pinball game. I have my Tron LE sitting next to my RFM and RFM still looks more advanced than the brand new Tron.
 
I recently got a Star Wars E1, which people seem to consider inferior to RFM....and yet when people come over to play they think it's the greatest pinball ever. P2K's are just awesome to look at. Mine was a fixer-upper at $1300, but I only put about $100 into it and it's perfect now with the exception of some beat up side art.
 
Just a word of caution. I was very much into RFM before I had one. Got a perfect one in the house, and it was gone in 6 weeks. Just doesn't stand up in a home environment, repetitive and boring, imho.
 
So are you still getting the Twister?

RFM is good. I like mine alot. You should be able to find one decent at a good price. I bought mine from the original owner, and it was HUO with lots of extras including a SWE1 kit for over $3K.

You should be able to get a routed one for far less.

It is, aside from Hyperball, the single pin that gets the most play when I have company over.

I've had a RFM for 2 years now. Not boring at all. Maybe the one you had was set up too easy? I've only gotten to wizard mode once.

The game has an incredibly deep ruleset with more multi-ball modes than just about any other pinball machine. It's amazingly underrated.

Agreed. How could it get boring? It's packed with way more variety than any standard pinball machine. Some of the FX and light shows are incredible. The Hypno-beam is so cool...and the game seems more beautiful than normal when it switches from black and white portals back to full color. The sound is incredible.

I suppose if you play by just hitting the center constantly, it could get boring...but every game has an "easy" way to play. Each stage has goals to complete in order to earn an insert on the UFO to work your way toward battling Mars.....making your shots and completing all the goals is fun!

Playing yours got me hooked on it. I played it quite a bit at CAX as well. Once I find Pinbot and STTNG, that will be at the top of my list.
 
That has to be a joke. Sttng is 10 times the game, not even a contest imo..

LOL.. really? I guess this demonstrates different strokes for different folks.. I guess someone has to buy those Abba albums that go #1.

I own both a STTNG and a RFM. The RFM is far more playable, with a much deeper ruleset, and appeals to both experienced and novice players.

I like STTNG, but STTNG is a very frustrating pin to play unless you know the ruleset and are a good player. The ruleset for STTNG is really shallow compared to RFM; the wizard mode is very easy to get to; the main multi-ball mode in STTNG can easily be attained even by a novice. The cannons in STTNG are only used in one gameplay mode (other than a skill shot option) - a huge expense for such a small part of the game. The video mode in STTNG is not random, so once you know the cave pattern, it's no longer even remotely challenging.

On top of that, STTNG has both design flaws and software problems. The outlanes are ridiculously bad; the game is a constant drain-monster and even the game's designer, Steve Richie acknowledged that it was not well-balanced. The ball save feature is essentially useless, and cannot be modified in configuration. STTNG is also widely regarded as one of the highest-maintenance games ever created, and it's a nightmare to get to some areas of the game to work on things. There are so many optos in this game, just getting them all to work right at the same time is difficult. The Delta Quadrant ramp requires that the right flipper be in perfect condition or the shot isn't even doable.

To make matters worse, none of the modes in STTNG stack -- you can be in one mode and screw it up by entering another mode. It's very annoying.

Contrast this with RFM, which is based on AFM which is unarguably regarded as one of the best pinball games of all time, and this sequel pays homage to the original game and expands and extends both the playability, modes and fun.

They're both great games, but I think RFM has much more to offer.

RFM is pretty though, I'll give it that haha. Awesome playfield design, software, etc make it a breeze to shop out and troubleshoot.

RFM is great for new players, and novices, I don't miss mine really. I like more challenging games like BSD, Fishtales, Shadow, Iron Man, etcetc
 
I will throw in some love for RFM, as it is easy to play, and fun to try and get through all the modes. For my level of skill(beginner/moderate) it is absolutely perfect. It is funny how many people look at the game an assume it is something new. Sad in a way how little has changed for so long. I do feel the Pin2k system has merits and Wizard Blocks looked like a step in the right direction from little I have seen..Anyway, hope you find one, it shouldn't be too hard as they made a few!

It is true, you can get through a lot of modes in RFM by shooting up the middle, but you will never get to wizard mode that way. You can't collect saucer lights that way, and the middle targets are sucker shots that will cause the ball to go STDM.

I also agree that it's tough to compare RFM and STTNG. They are fundamentally different styles of games. STTNG is designed to have short ball times. Unless you set up RFM very conservative, you're likely to have longer ball times, but I think in terms of skill, it takes just as much skill to complete each RFM mode with a "flawless" rating as it does to complete the STTNG modes well.

As far as diversity of things to do, I think RFM takes STTNG every time. The bonus modes are really cool. The humor and diversity in audio callouts is unparalleled. STTNG is like "the enemy" I have to beat. RFM is like "a friend" that's fun to play.

In fact, after owning a RFM and properly setting it up to not be too easy, I'm inclined to want o get a SWE1 now...even though that game got mixed reviews, I am thinking the playability and challenge of P2K games have a lot to do with how they're set up. By default, since it was an entirely new system that had loads of content, they were set up liberally to allow much longer-than-normal ball times. If you switch them back to more conservative settings, the games become challenging with the added bonus of having 3-4 times more content to try to get to when you have a good game.
