I've been doing some research on the Rampart Jamma PCB and wanted an education lesson on the differences of the PCB's.

I see that there is a 2-player and 3-player version of the PCB. I've been looking at the pictures of the PCB's on-line and didn't see any connections on the PCB's itself to connect the three player connectors.

I also wanted an education lesson on a wheter or not there is a trackball version and a joystick version.
How can you tell the difference of a three player versus the two player version and whether or not the PCB is a trackball or a joystick version?

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

3 player is trackball 2 player is joystick. Although I am pretty sure I have a proto rampart control panel that has holes for 2 trackballs. It was unpopulated when I got it.. But it has a red and blue overlay.

Maybe the 3 player has an extra connector for 3rd controls.. All I know is 3 player board has a sticker on it..

Thanks for the feedback Bill.
So from what I'm gathering so far is that the Rampart three player can only be used with a trackball or can you just wire the board for joysticks and it will work with joysticks?
As for the 3-player connector, I'm still not sure where the connection would be on the board itself, at least from what pictures I've seen from the internet.
What does this sticker look like that is on the three player boards?
Anyone else care to chime in with any other information?

I have the 2P joystick PCB (and it took a while to track down, the 3P version is much easier to find).

I don't know if you can convert from one to the other, but the 2P joystick version just isn't as much fun for the following reasons:

Trackball can move much faster around the screen. There is a button to speed up the cursor on the 2P version, but it's mapped to the Start button, which isn't very practical.

1 vs 1 play isn't nearly as much fun as 2 vs 1 (2 weaker players ganging up on the better player) or 1 vs 1 vs 1.

That said it's still decent, but every time I play it I wish I had the 3P version instead.

Let's just say it took me a number of years to find a 2P one, and I passed up a lot of 3P ones in that time. I don't know the actual # made on either, but for a while all the ones on ebay or on sale here were for the 3P one.

I eventually got mine from a semi-local collector via the Seattle collector email list.

Thanks for the feedback Bill.

I would have to get to my cab to be sure and right now I got a bees nest in the wall in that garage and I can't mess around there until I can move the games out..

here is pinout for 3 player. All 3 trackballs plug into the harness. so its unique setup with no extra connector.

So it looks like from what your telling me I either need a trackball setup for the 3-player version due to no possibility for joystick or I need to go the 2-player board route, right?

Here is a picture of my three player Rampart trackball PCB. Just in case you still wanted to see one. I think Rampart is much more fun as a three player game with trackballs.

Thanks for the photo.
It looks like I am unfortunately sunk for the time being.
Thanks to everyone that replied to this.
I'll keep my eyes open for a three player cabinet. but from what I've been told I might have them open for quite some time.
