I just picked up a Rampage machine to restore... the audio is a little sketchy, and I have some theories as to why, but I'd like to see if any of you fellers have ideas/advice.

The sounds are all there, but everything sounds blown out. Rampage runs in mono & the signal heads to a small amp board before going off to the two speakers. The volume control (which is wired to the sound board) works properly. The distortion is still present even at low levels, leaving me to believe it's something with the amp board. Oh, and I also tried new speakers to rule out the possibility that something was wrong with the speakers (which were already new to the cab).

So, I'm thinking it's the amp. There was some sort of attenuator laying in the cab with wires coming out, not hooked to anything. I was thinking that this somehow went between the amp and the speakers to regulate the amp's level, but the wires don't match up & I don't see any holes as to where it would've been mounted.

Could the amp be blown? The amp board looks fine, there's no damage to it & everything appears intact.

If it's the amp, are aftermarket ones available? I don't think it was proprietary to this game...I know this same amp was used in Tron (and probably plenty other games), reading the stuff about its schematics in the manual. The manual offers nothing in the way of an attenuator, so that was probably at some point an aftermarket add-on.

Has anyone ever run into this issue with any of their games? Basically, distorted audio even at low levels.

Not that anyone responded, but I was able to get a different Rampage sound board & boom... it's all good. I was so sure it was the amp board, but nope.
