Raiden II, one helluva cool vertical shooter.

Sound goes dead after 10-15 minutes, turn it off and cool and sound comes back.

sound roms going bad or maybe volume pot? dunno . Easy fix maybe?

I'd try the sound CPU first...

Or you can use a can of Component Cooler (or canned air turned upside down) to cool down the CPU and see if it plays for longer without locking up. ;)

how hard is that sound chip to replace? is it just a matter of someone having a blank chip, a burner and the right data?

I doubt it's the YM at fault, I've never come across one that has failed. Having said that I have not come across a CPU which fails after being on for 10-15 minutes either, but trying another Z80 would be the first thing I'd do as well.

10 minutes is a long time for a flaky Z80 to run happily.

Is the heatsink on the amp chip getting very hot? Hard to tell from your post if "cool = good" or "cool = allow it to cool down". It is possible that you have bad filter caps in the amp section, the amp chip is oscillating, getting damn hot and eventually the thermal cut off kicks in and you lose sound.

The amp chip should be warm to the touch, if its so hot you cant comfortably hold your finger on it then you need to look at the caps across the 12v line.

My Raiden II started whistling after 15 minutes of play and the problem was traced back to a faulty capacitor and a bad solder pad. Something to try if you run into a wall on this, caps are cheap.
