Hey guys,

I am looking for some suggestions on what racing games you know of that can use a joystick setup as apposed to a wheel. What I would really like is a game like Top Speed or Chase HQ that would work with a joystick setup, preferably jamma, but doesn't have to be.

So far, I have found out that World Racing and World Racing 2 actually have a dip switch option for using a joystick or wheel, which is great. I am planning on getting one of them, but what are some on-road "Top Speed" like racing games that you guys know of that can use a joystick?

Thanks

Trolling MAWS reveals many that MAME indicates are joystick (not "dial" or "paddle" control):

Rally-X
High Way Race
F-1 Grand Prix
F-1 Dream
Jumping Cross
Lethal Crash Race
Mad Gear
Drift Out
Neo Drift Out
Over Top
Rad Racer
Rally Bike
Riding Hero
Road Fighter
Super Chase - Criminal Termination
Excitebike
Vs. Excitebike
Nose to Tail
Super Cross II
Backfire
Burnin' Rubber
...
got tired of looking/typing

Excellent idea! I never noticed that detail on MAWs before. Looks like I got some researching to do ;)

Thanks a bunch

Hmm, on second thought, I am not sure how accurate MAWS is for control details. It is telling me games like Daytona USA, Crazy Taxi and San Francisco Rush 2049 are 8-way Joystick when obviously they are not. I didn't see anything in the manuals of Daytona USA or others about a setting for standard joystick input anyways. Any input on this strange discrepancy?

Thanks

Neo drift out is fun, and there is another racing game for the neo that plays similarly, can't think of the name right now.

Careful with the MAWS results, I emailed to tell them that Centipede etc uses a trackball.
There IS a setting for joystick AFAIK, and he said because of that he wouldn't change it. Quite frankly the primary control type for a game should be listed.

Anyone ever played it with a joystick? I know I've never seen a machine with a joy...and just because you can, doesn't mean you should or that it will even work very well.

Really? That would be great if I could get a joystick going for Top Speed. The reason I doubted it is because I don't see a pin for left or right controls on the pinout for the board, as seen in the manual...

There is a pin named "22 steering" and "steering 21". Could that work for left and right on a joystick maybe? I don't have any arcade steering wheel experience to know what would happen if I tried this.

I want to buy Top Speed and try it, but I don't want to spend the money if I am not sure if it will work for a joystick or not and I don't want to damage it if it doesn't work.

Mile Miglia is a pretty decent joystick racing game, with fun cars. I have it in my multi Jamma set up just for a change of pace.

Yea, Mile Miglia looks kind of like an older style World Racing or Neo Drift Out, so it should be pretty good.

Does anyone have an answer about the Top Speed pinout that I asked about a couple of posts back?

Thanks

After a little more browsing, I'm starting to agree with IJTFCinder: Take the MAWS "controls" data with a grain of salt. In some cases, it appears just plain wrong.

Gamester: looking at the MAME driver and the PDF manual; I'd say no, it (Top Speed) doesn't look like there's any support for joystick inputs. The MAME driver has some code in there to "fake" joystick input & simulate the analog wheel, I guess that's what the MAWS database is getting confused by...

Not really a setting; Centipede was apparently built with joystick input circuitry (in addition to the TB input) and a seperate joystick input connector (J19). I don't see any way to select/switch between the two, so I guess they're both always active...

No, I've never played it with a stick.

Like 1000 Mile Rally, World Rally can also be played with a joystick. Not as fun as using the wheel, but still very enjoyable with a stick. It's fun to watch non players struggle with it.

Yea, it might not be worth risking buying Top Speed and end up frying it by trying to use the steering pins for a joystick. I assume it probably won't work right anyways.

Man, I sure would like to play a game like Top Speed on my super gun though. So far, all the more decent chase view racing games I want to play, Chase HQ, Outrun, Cruis'n USA, ect. won't work with a joystick :(

Just curious, does anyone know anything about the game called "Wheels & Fire"? It looks suspiciously similar to Top Speed...

Yea, it looks like my only option right now is that style of racing game, World Rally, Milia Miga, DriftOut, ect. which is fine for now. I really would like a chase view racing game for my super gun though. I only hope some day soon that I can get in a position to have the money and space for some real cabinets :D
