Ok fellas here's the story lol..

I've had this issue ever since i got the machine and to be honest, i planned on leaving it alone. The problem is i play it so much that it has become very annoying.

Hopefully i dont make it worse :D

All my engine sounds are fine, tire screech is fine, sound effects when i hit cows, road signs, thats all fine.

When im at the car /track selection menu, or at the championship challenge ready to race, some "trumpet" sounds in that intro music are good, some are off key, some are missing. One note in particular if the race starts at that particular time it will hang and the whole race i have to listen to beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep Every once in awhile if you start the game at the wrong time the sound will wigout and go silent or with just a minor hum.. cycle power and all ok again except original glitch.

I ran a selftest and everything checks out ok on dsp ram steering etc etc says sound board ok but comes back with "bad soundwave rom checksums".. hmm...

I really dont know where these would be located... WHat do you think? Bad rom or crappy connection? fyi when i first got this machine it was acting all kinds of goofy and the +5 was literally at 6v!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO theres a possibility a rom could have got cooked too.

Whatya think guys? Any other race/hard drivin guys run into this issue?

well well well the plot thickens. After the mainself test i got to the service menu. UInder special functions, theres alot more sound board tests. I checked sound wave rom checksums, and its showing:

(sorry cannot find good camera damn three yearolds)

There is no parts breakdown of any pcb except the apu, and main video board in the manual iirc.

I want to say jed margolin had releases some schems of the other boards but beats me as to where. Ive found them before but i guess i should have bookmarked it lol

found this tidbit of info on jed margonis site.. seems the good tested roms checksums match his.. bad rom checksums do not match his.

136077-1033 $E533 45N (RL) A Program 1033.bin

Sound Data Memory is 8 bits.

136052-1124 $5F02 55A (8) A Sound Data 55A.bin

136077-1017 $DB09 45C (8) A Sound Data 45C.bin

I think the order of the Sound Data ROMS doesn't matter. Mine are:
136052-1123 $EE01 65A
136052-1124 $5F02 55A
136052-3125 $CC03 55C (45A)
136052-1126 $2B09 65C (30A)
136077-1017 $DB09 45C

Self-Test may think there are supposed to be 6 ROMS. It is wrong.

GALs are GAL16V8, 25 ns

Ok.. Turns out the soundboard is the last board twoards the backdoor, so i do have access to it.

I pulled those two roms (30a and 45c) sanded the legs and reinsteted the two suspect roms. Same result. Actually, i think i lost a few more notes.

I then pulled every rom off one at a time and cleaned, reinserted. Same.

I then pulled the big processor chip off, and check this picture!!! FULL of dust bunnies!!! I cleaned it but same result basically. but now im back to where i was before i started tinkering.

I suppose my next step is to get some sound roms burned, a little deoxit in the sockets and try that???
