I acquired this Race Drivin' today for $75 and have promptly started to disassemble it. The game is in working condition, but is a far way from 100%. The cabinet is in alright shape, though some mice apparently made it their home at one point.

Issues that have to be resolved (in order of importance):

The thing needs cleaned. Badly.

The 6" pulley on the steering assembly and the 2" pulley on the motor don't look like they line up quite right so I will have to figure out how to get them back in alignment.

Someone in the past also replaced the shifter and it is permanently stick in the 3rd gear position.

The seat needs redone.

The brake pedal is a little whacky... I guess I'll be on the market soon for a new one. This is a very hard game to play with out a brake.

I'm debating whether or not to pull the chassis out and put a LCD monitor into the machine. If I decide on going that route I would rather do it now while it is in pieces than later.

Any suggestions/advice? This is my first real project so I'm trying to keep myself from getting in over my head, though I already feel like I failed at that.

Noooooooooooo...

Assuming there's screen burn, do a tube swap from a TV tube. The info is all on here if you search. If the chassis has issues, do a cap kit or send it out for repair.

It was just an idea... I know that LCDs are in general frown upon around here. The CRT is in overall good shape so I'll probably just keep it.

How easy is it to flip the video on a LCD to work with the mirror? Never tried, but I would look into that..

did you calibrate the pedals?

I think both pullys are held in place with a set screw. Loosen them and re-align them.

did you remove the bracket that holds the marquee and monitor glass in place? Be careful as the marquee glass will fall out. I crushed a hard drivin. Not sure if I saved the part.. I know I saved the seat top. I just don't remember if the seat is good.

I think the shifter is a standard atari 4 position shifter. If not I saved that part.

No the cab does not break down. It looks like it might, but the base is 1 solid peice.
