R4/R4i carts Retailer scams..

If your into jamma, and into Nintendo DS's, then your probably familiar with the R4 card. (dstt, etc...)

Theres about 30 websites, 90% in hongkong, and the rest in UK that sell these cards. MOST ARE SCAMS.

Anyone have any luck with a US retailer, or even know if there is one?

NXPgame was based in Queens, but they got shut down hard.

There have been a few members here recently attempting to sell older R4 cards. Look through the console forum and see if any of them still have them for sale.

but R4 cards only work on DS and DS lite. You go to get a R4i to work on DSi and DSi XL

however i HAVE found a US distributor and have already spoken to them. Just ordered 1 card and now I wait to see if they are legit.

If they are I will post it.

There were a large number of counterfeit R4 and DSTT cards around at one point.

Sale of these carts in Australia is illegal, we've had several retailers stung with huge fines for selling them. GadgetGear for one. Their site is gone, I wonder if that put them out of business, since selling mod carts was their big selling point.

Went through the r4 thing yeaaars ago when it was new and fresh before the market got flooded with 100 different makers of the damn thing. The originals were the bomb.

I love the whole "Clone" debate that still rages. They're ALL cheaply made and all use the same kind of components.

I have an original R4 and an R4 Ultra. The R4 Ultra? I run AceKard firmware on it, that the AceKard team actually released for it. The original R4? Wood R4 firmware...which omg, looks and works just like the AceKard firmware.

These things aren't super high tech, there are no real "poor" clones that are bad knock-offs. All of them have had their RMA's, including the so-called "Originals".

There is a shop near me that sells R4's and TT's, I haven't looked into their prices though as I don't need any, I could look for someone here if they wanted though.

I was reading about the clones the other day, some support SDHC which i wish mine did. The only problems they have is they cant use "official firmware" other than that whats the difference??

Nothing really, and most "Official" firmwares are long dead and unsupported. If it wasn't for the 3rd party firmwares I'd still need to patch games.

Example? Zelda Spirit Tracks on my R4 with Offficial Firmware needs a patch. Wood R4 firmware? None required.

Same goes for my R4 Ultra, a clone. It's "Official" firmware is long outdated, and the AceKard team released their firmware for the device as well, as the hardware inside is IDENTICAL to an AceKard.

Yeah, the only problem with the R4's is the newer games don't work. I've kept my eye out for a newer type, but not sure what to get.

If you do get your hands on an original R4, just use the Wood R4 firmware and this isn't an issue.

If you're looking for/find a clone, go for the R4 Ultra and use the AKAIO Firmware found on it's website.

With either, you can grab yourself an EZ Flash 3-in-1 for Gameboy Advance support too, launching those ROMs straight from the DS firmware with no need for something like GBAExploder.

Of course this is assuming you have a DS/DSLite, I have no use for a DSi and it's cameras and losing the Slot 2. That thing is like buying a PSP GO...it's worthless unless you have no care for Slot 2.

any links of the wood firmware?? I got a cart and monday in the mail im getting my microSD cards, I believe mines an original, its white and says r4 revolution on it? Whats the best way to set this up

Is there a chance for gba support on this?? I didnt quite understand your sentence with the 3in1 explorer sorry

Wow, very nice. This new menu looks much nicer. They were $60 when I bought mine. I have to get another and $15 shipped doesn't sound bad at all.

before you buy, let me be the guinne pig. I just received a tracking number on Friday night, they are 3 day expressing it to me. When i get it and test it, Ill give everyone my feedback.

BUT... if these guys are LEGIT, the US r4 underground has been really waiting for a legit r4 dealer, especially based from the US. 30:1 ratio of fraud websites vs legit is a really bad market.

Its funny how people justify themselves ripping people off with R4s. "Well your ripping the VG companies off, so we rip you off"

Even when I bought mine years ago, it wasn't terribly easy to find a US dealer. I have no idea who it was now, but as far as I know I wasn't ripped off. I compared mine to pics of legit ones at the time and all seemed well.

It worked for what I needed it for so I never really cared anyway :p I might give this firmware a shot, though, it does look much nicer (assuming it can be used on my old card).

The original R4 was found in white in the 2nd Gen run I do believe. I'd find it hard to believe you found an original for sale new though, they've been out of production for years now.

It is possible, but it's more likely you have a clone. You won't wreck your card trying the wrong firmware, so throw Wood R4 on it and if it loads then so be it, if not...then you'll have to figure out what firmware you CAN use.

And yes, you can do GBA with nearly any Slot 1 card, as in keeping the ROMs on the Slot 1(R4's MicroSD), you just need something like the EZ-Flash 3in1 to do so.
The 3in1 is written to with a GBA ROM, and acts like a real cartridge. YOu don't fill it up with ROMs, your loader(GBAExploder or newer Slot 1 firmwares) writes to it and then boots the Slot 2.
