R-Type with Sharp xm-2001 monitor problems

OK. Today I went I tried to adjust a few settings. I noticed there is a fairly loud hum and it seems to be coming from the flyback. It almost goes away when I adjust the V.Hold and also when I adjust the Screen. Could this be a bad flyback or something as simple as a new cap kit.

Start off by cleaning all of the adjustment pots on the chassis and then adjust them to get a good picture. I use an electronics cleaning spray from radioshack (I'm sure there are other sources). Spray some cleaner under the knob of the pot and give it a few full turns in each direction.

I had the same issue on a Sanyo 20ez after I did a cap kit. I usually clean the pots when I do cap kits, but I didn't this time because they looked clean. Turned out it was a dirty H hold pot. I always clean the pots now :)

OK. Actually the chassis is probably the cleanest I've seen other than a brand new one. It must have been just refurbished or something as it's clean as a whistle. I will pick some cleaner up tomorrow and give it a shot anyway. Still though, should the flyback be sounding this way?

Its difficult to give advice on the flyback sound without hearing it and seeing the monitor. I would say if the flyback is working well (holding focus and holding brightness) and not arcing/sparking, leave it alone.

From your pictures it looks like you need to turn down the screen control on the flyback. Your picture is so bright that you can see the retrace lines (horizontal slanted lines).

OH yes. I had never really seen it run normal so I just watched a few youtubes of it playing. Definitely way to bright. I will clean the pots and see if I can do some more adjustments and report back this evening. Thanks

Have you recapped it yet?

No, not yet. I want to eliminate the simple stuff first. I am cleaning the pots today and if that does not help, I will do a visual inspection and then get a cap kit and probably a new flyback. I don't like the way it buzzes or hums. Doesn't sound right.

UPDATE: I just went and checked the pots again. I don't know if this could cause the problem but the H.Center pot does nothing. When I turn the pot from lowest to highest, the screen does not change at all. Could it be a bad pot?

OK. I finished the cap kit tonight but I did not get it back in the cab yet. Most of the caps I replaced looked good except for the one that come off the neckboard. It was all cruddy and looked like stuff had been leaking out the bottom. But I also noticed this in one section of the chassis. It looks like it may have over heated at one point. Could this be causing my problem.
