R-Type to Playchoice 10 Cab NOT BAD!!!!

It's the same cab save color and surface treatment. The black ones were vinyl/melamine, the grey ones were laminate. Same cab dimensions and profile. I'm doing the exact same thing this summer, except I will be using black textured vinyl rather than paint. To give you an idea of how cheap Nintendo was getting at this point in time, the interior, roof, floor, coin box tower and the back (and back door) of these cabs was made out of construction grade OSB. Some know it as chip board.

I guess you're as "BLIND" as the rest of us.

Isn't OSB the cheapest manufactured board you can buy?

Other than the OSB pieces, they were particle board weren't they, and made in the USA rather than Japan?

Yep, very weak particle board, barely a step up from MDF. Nearly every one of these cabs I have seen has a broken corner or 4. The strange thing is that though they used cheap materials, the fit and finish of the cab assembly was pretty sophisticated. That speaker 'bar' is pretty sweet and the cab parts are put together with routed tongues and grooves.

That's unusual. Is it actual tongue and groove or just dado joints? Either way, that goes well beyond the typical attached ~3/4" x 3/4" strips of wood used to form lap joints (which is plenty sufficient though).

Yeah, dadoes, tongues in slots whatever you wanna call it. The slot extends down a bit from the bottom in the front of the cab. It's hard to replicate the slot when you repair the corners with bondo.

Everything that MaxRecoil and Phet have said about this cab and the VS. UniSystem system that it started as is correct AFAIK.

painted flat black vs semi gloss?

I had a PC10 a while back and it was beautiful. I then realized that the original cab for it was this...

I already had 2 of them and more games.

VS cabs are cool cause the ROMS are different from NES games. R-type is the only dedicated cab in this shape. I would say that it has way more personality than a PC10 or a the VS. UniSystem. (which is different from a standard Nintendo with a VS kit.)

I do have nintendo and about 100 NES games... I hardly plays them because of my kids. They tend to jump in and my turn my turn! lol I do enjoy playing nintendos home console with kids. I cant focus and try beat a game if they re around!.... Arcades.. I can!!!!!! That s a plus for me!!!

I loved Rtype and I have Rtype in my MAME and it runs real good!!!! Yes of course I have Pacman and Playchoice in my MAME too I just enjoy restore and it looks sexy in red and black!!!!!!!!

The other cheap thing they did was to use plywood for the bases rather than solid hardwood like they did for the plywood Nintendo cabs. Here's what those bases could look like after 20 years:

That's ridiculous. Fortunately, the pedestals could be seen as sacrificial material, and are easily replaced. It also looks like they didn't bother to use miter joints at the corners of the pedestal, like the old Nintendo cabinets did.

I wonder who built these "last hurrah" cabinets from Nintendo. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the same people that built the classic DK and Punch-Out style cabinets.

Nope, but I did when I built the replacement base:

Nice work? More like abomination...

R-Type cabinets aren't the same as PC10 cabinets, and that thing looked way better as an R-Type.

I could think of worse things to have done though.

Edit: I'm not insulting your work, I think you did a good job...just to the wrong cabinet.

Heres my HUO PC-10. Looks like the same to me?

Actually, I just thought I should show a picture since everyone else was

To wmacmonagle, it may not be an exact original, but it looks darn good (and as long as it plays well, that is all that matters, right?).

Just done minus the sidearts. It s not best things I can see but pretty good.

Im still struggling what sidearts to put on it. Putting full sideart (playchoice) looks ok ok to me. Im thinking about maybe just put "Nintendo" into Punch out style.. diag style?

any feedbacks would be much appreciated.

They are generic and actually kinda cool but good mostly for service.
