R-Type Restoration

Thanks for posting this phet!! I just now realized that my R-type has no base. I had no idea that it was supposed to have one and wondered why my bottom kept flaking to hell every time I moved it. Its also very short because of that and I have to sit down to play it. I got some work to do now. Sigh..........

Yep, it has a 4.5" high base on it, 22 3/8" wide by 22 3/4 long. They were originally made from cheap 1" plywood strips with rabbit joints joining them at the 4 corners. I used 3/4 SPF boards and mitred the corners 45 degrees, adding 90 degree wood wedges for strength. I then cut 4 - 5/8" square dowels 18 3/4 long for the mounting frame, securing them the cab floor with wood glue and 1 1/4" crown staples. Then I placed the base around the dowel frame and secured it to the dowels with glue and the same staples, driven sideways from the inside of the dowels. What's weird on these cabs, is the the moving wheels are fastened to the back baseboard with 1/4" T-nuts and stove bolts. I reproduced this on my base, but I inset the wheels an inch further in, to compensate for the corner wedges:

The machine looks really great in the twisted cross. I love the artwork, it's beautiful. Again, nice work!

I wish I started this thread and not that 'other' one. :)

The game is pretty cool, for sure. Incredibly hard. You can download the PSone version for the PSP. It's a direct port of the arcade game including the insert coin part. Very hard yet fun. Love it, Phet.

I always never thought of it as a true ninty game but seeing it in a row really makes me feel otherwise. Awesome.

Is the video inverted?

Thanks man. The sounds on this game rock. I love it.

Looks awesome man, I'm jealous of that sideart, that's all I lack on mine. My friends have offered to buy mine for the last couple years, but no way is it leaving. Damn game is so hard, it keeps me playing it. The fifth level, jesus wept, it's a fucking bitch. Fucking flying scissors. How far can you get?

Hahahaha, not very far yet. Only played it 3x. It seems pretty sweet, like Gradius on Steroids.

man how have some of you never played this?? Its amazing. one of the classic side scrolling shooters!! its a keeper.

very nice resto!

I love R-Type, it's awesome. I played it tons BITD. The music is great. I never did finish it though, probably got to the last level. I woundn't really consider it a Nintendo game though, it's IREM all the way. I guess the cabinet is Nintendo and the game is IREM.

Yeah, the cabinet is Nintendo, there are Nintendo logos all over the artwork, but the game was developed by Irem. I suppose it's a similar situation to Moon Patrol, though I still think of that as a Williams game, just like I think of this as a Ninty game. Poor Irem, seems they get about as much recognition as Namco. I still think of Pacman as Bally-Midway and always will.

X2 I am also surprised to hear so many here have yet to experience it's awesomeness. I never saw a machine in the wild until I bought mine a week agobut always knew that an arcade version existed, just not where I lived. I played this game to death on my SNES,Gameboy, and later PS1. It was just released in 2009 for the sega master system which makes no sense to me being that the system is dead and this game came out in 87'' Fourteen years later? lol I'm very happy with my machine but as others have stated, the difficulty is through the roof and I have mine set to medium. Time to go to easy I guess. IMO all of these side scroll space shooters were always to difficult. Relentless swarms of enemies all at once is just to much.

Gorgeous restoration! I salvaged mine from the depths of abuse-hell, cleaned the living crap out of it (had marker on the marquis and cigarette burn/stains on the control panel). Sideart is mostly intact, but there are scratches across the middle of some of the art I can't do much about. Also had to rebuild a corner of the machine that was broken off, with water putty. That was a pain, but at least the corner is back. It could use a repainting, a better bottom (like your rebuild) and a tighter stick. Otherwise, it's decent and one of the most played in my collection. Love that game! I can get to level 5, but it's damn hard getting past level 4 to do so.
