I picked this up early in January or so, set it in the garage and forgot about it really. I pulled out to start cleaning it up and began restoring it. Ironically, about a day later I was contacted by someone thru VAPS (I guess) asking if I was selling it and I said sure, why not, I'll sell it as is. As I hadn't heard from the dude in several days and I had planned on restoring the machine, I decided to start cleaning it up. The next thing I knew, I had restored the damned thing. Of course, now that it was restored, I either needed more money for it or I planned on keeping it and adding it to my Ninty swastika. Buyer and I couldn't agree on a new price for the additional work, so I decided to just hold onto it, as I have never seen or owned a nearly new-looking R-Type before.

First off, I was gonna just wipe it down, clean it up and vacuum it out. As I delved in, I realized it needed a new paint job. Only problem was, the original sideart was 99% intact and mostly unfaded, so I really didn't want to scrape it off and hope to find a repro somewhere. I decided to pull a 'Nick's Popeye' and masked off the side art before painting around it. Worked beautifully, no paint ridge, perfect edge. Then I noticed the base was a flaking, delaminating, moldy pile of shit:

Time to destroy it, remove it and build a new one:

Here's a close-up of the side art/paint edge:

The front right corner as you face the game was thrashed. In fact, it was completely gone. Actually, 3 out of 4 of the corners were thrashed, but this one was the worst. You can see the inside edge in this before pic:

I used the plexi/mold filled with bondo method to build it up:

Things I re-used:

T-molding (may replace when offset black is available)
CPO (only has a quarter size tear on the right side)
Side Art (99% there)

Anyone know the correct button colors for this machine? I have a feeling the ones on there were whatever the previous owner had that would fit.

Another sub-par resto......of course I'm kidding. That thing looks fabulous. Is the DK Jr up next? That thing looks rough!

Wow, you just know a game is nicely restored when it looks perfect in natural sunlight! That always seems to bring out even the smallest imperfections.

Congrats on finishing up some an awesome resto!

Phet,it looks FANTASTIC!

Tell me.. do you like the game?? I have played it on my PSP A LOT and can't decide if it is worth pursuing. What do you think?

I have never played it Johnny, but the graphics look stellar. I think it'll be a fun one once I get the hang of it. I'd go after one, better graphics than any Ninty game I've ever seen.

Got her moved to the Southern Arm of the Ninty Swastika. Fits right in with her shorter cousins:
