I picked this up early in January or so, set it in the garage and forgot about it really. I pulled out to start cleaning it up and began restoring it. Ironically, about a day later I was contacted by someone thru VAPS (I guess) asking if I was selling it and I said sure, why not, I'll sell it as is. As I hadn't heard from the dude in several days and I had planned on restoring the machine, I decided to start cleaning it up. The next thing I knew, I had restored the damned thing. Of course, now that it was restored, I either needed more money for it or I planned on keeping it and adding it to my Ninty swastika. Buyer and I couldn't agree on a new price for the additional work, so I decided to just hold onto it, as I have never seen or owned a nearly new-looking R-Type before.
First off, I was gonna just wipe it down, clean it up and vacuum it out. As I delved in, I realized it needed a new paint job. Only problem was, the original sideart was 99% intact and mostly unfaded, so I really didn't want to scrape it off and hope to find a repro somewhere. I decided to pull a 'Nick's Popeye' and masked off the side art before painting around it. Worked beautifully, no paint ridge, perfect edge. Then I noticed the base was a flaking, delaminating, moldy pile of shit:
Time to destroy it, remove it and build a new one:
Next up, finished pics.
