I don't know what I was thinking, but I thought R-type was a dude like Section Z, not a ship like Gradius. What makes R-type any different from Gradius? Is it better graphics? Better gameplay, bosses? Seems like the same frickin' game to me. I love Gradius, but I already have it in vs. form, I didn't need another version titled 'R-Type'. Am I wrong?

My opinion....R-type has better music, powerups, bosses and levels!!!!

When you get down to gameplay, sure they're pretty similar. There are some big differences between the two besides the fact they are both horizontal shooters. The power ups operate differently, the R-Type atmosphere is much more biological than planetary, and they just have an overall different vibe to them.

I'm an R-Type man myself, but if you prefer shooting Moai heads to shooting H.R. Geiger type critters, then Gradius is probably for you.

Both great games. Just thought I'd add my opinion that Lifeforce offers the best of both worlds.

They're similarly themed horizontal shooters, but different in many ways. They're no more similar than vertical shooters like Twin Cobra, Twin Eagle, 1943, etc. are to one another :)

Both are good games. I've always preferred the style, music, and enemies in Gradius. R-Type seems to be a bit unfair in spots, whereas Gradius is difficult without being unfair.

Lifeforce is the best of the series IMHO. I love going from side to the top down perspective. Excellent music and great bosses.

I love them all though.

Was blazing lazers ever a coin op? I know I have it for tg16 and wii virtual console.
That's a great one!

Don't forget to check out ikaruga also!

They are different sub-genres of Shumps...

R-Type is a tactical shmup.
Gradius is more standard.

I hate tactical shmups like R-Type and Last Resort.

R-Type is essentially impossible to play without some degree of obstacle memorization. Since the game uses checkpoints when you die, you end up relying heavily upon trial and error, and memorization of the right mechanics to complete a given section. The game simply cannot be played successfully by skill alone, and this makes it very hard by comparison.

Gradius and it's variants (like Darius and Parodius) are more twitch oriented / less technical, and can be played with better success using skill alone.

I love R-Type for its style and sheer difficulty, but the game really has no soul.
