The base is pretty ugly and there is a nice sized chunk missing from the front bottom corner of the side not shown. It could use bondoing and a repaint. The side art is nice on both sides.

I picked up an R-Type end of last year for $100. It needs cabinet work (chunks missing from front) and new side art.

Fun game! I played the heck out of that one back in my high school days. One of two games I could finish on a quarter.
Like what everyone else says, just don't die in the later levels and you will be fine. I think there are only 5 or 6 levels. Once you lose all the cool weapons you are toast.
Also R-Type has some really good intense video game music as well. .

Level 1-3 are easy
Level 4 is easy asl long as you remember the pattern of the olive generators and sometimes the level 4 boss is a bitch!
Level 5 is not bad but the "Brain' boss is the toughest in the game!
Level 6 is not bad as long as you memorize the patterns of the machines
Level 7 in my opinion is the toughest ALOT of enemies; so so boss
Level 8 Is not bad the head boss is easy!!! Hint you need to place the force in the right spot!!!
The key to this game is the powerups and the options.
I use the red powerup(the Rings) cause it's the most powerful..Definate must on the 5th boss!
