So I recently purchased a game from DNS (Foodfight) and had it shipped to me without a monitor. I was quoted around $260 (if I would pick it up from their dock).
Today I received the bill:

$391 (shipping) + $158.48 (miscalculation)

So I contacted R&L and they removed the "miscalculation fee", but say that I still need to pay the $391.

I told them that if they would have quoted me $391, I wouldnt have used them.
They said that the Foodfight was class 250 instead of class 100 and they cannot do anything to change the price.

Actual quote:
I got a hold of someone at R&L to discuss the re-class. It was inspected and was 48x44x78 which at 280 lbs is 2.9lbs/cubic foot. I have attached the inspection sheet they sent me. I booked this shipment at class 100 and when they come back with these numbers and paper work there is not much that I can do. Let me know if you have any questions. Again, I apologize for the inconvenience.

Jon

I just sent my Space Duel off through R&L. According to the bill of lading, it was classified as class 125.

...

Do you have the invoice # or the bill of lading (or whatever its called)? Maybe they would reconsider if they did some research on other shipments.
I think its is BS though.. Considering there was no monitor in the game.

Have you already received the machine or do they hold it hostage until you pay? If you already have the machine I'd tell them to pound sand.

I have to say I didn't have a very good experience with them either. Their communication was terrible and they were several days late with a delivery. I ended up escalating the problem to the VP in order to get the game.

i've shipping by them several times and was always used class 100, never had a real problem, just not the gentlest of service....

It is pro # 25956868-5. I cant find any other useful numbers.

We ship via FedEx and have never had any issues. They have been really great to work with. They have us use class 85 with them.

I have the machine already.

Im probably just gonna send them the $$$ they originally quoted me.

That is exactly what I'd do... i'd send them the estimate they quoted (sure hope you have that in writing?) as well as a check for that amount.

I've said it a lot since yesterday, but I highly recommend uship.com

I've only had one shipment, but it was a great experience and quite affordable. And fast! It all depends on whose service you decide to go with of course, but based on feedback score, I would say you'd be pretty safe. You can always call them to discuss arrangements beforehand as well. And once the bid is locked in, that's exactly the amount you're required to pay.

Based on what i've read here... I've heard more bad about USHIP.COM than good. I also discussed USHIP.COM with an advertiser who moves boats... he had nothing but bad things to say as well.

Hell, the only service that seems to get any relatively consistent positive remarks is NAVL... but I've even heard horror stories about NAVL.

Like I said, it all depends on whose service you choose. I had a great experience with the movers I chose and I would use them again if I needed to. With any service, there is always a chance of issues. For Exidy, it was a quote and payment issue where he believed they quoted him a specific price and they came back with another. With uship, that wouldn't happen. It's sealed once the bid is accepted. They can't charge you anymore than what's booked.

The folks in this community do enough shipping of games that there's always going to be plenty of horror stories about shippers. For me it comes down to who of the mentioned ones have fewer horror stories and in that of all the ones I've read it seems like NAVL has marginally fewer horror stories. They all seem to have screwed up royally in a lot of ways over the years though.

No offense, but the key word in here is "estimate". It's not called a "this is the final bill and exactly what you are paying". It's an _estimate_ based on figures provided.

Now, if the estimate is based on a mistake made by the shipper at the time of the estimate (misclassing the item even though you provided the correct information, for example), then that's a completely different story. Screw them, in that case.

Then the "estimate" should have been corrected prior to the actual shipping. An "estimated cost" is deemed "actual cost" once the work is done unless the "estimated cost" is updated prior to the service being provided.

There is no way in hell, for example, that a landscaper drops by... estimates a $1000 job... then hands me a bill for $1400 after the work is done. The proper way for price changes to occur is for the guy to say, "Hey , that estimate I provided was off a little... the new cost is going to be $xxx.xx... do you want me to provide the service?"

I'm not arguing with you here, but trying to clarify your point: Are you saying the shipper should have shown up, realized that the item should have been classed differently, and either left the item there or waited while trying to contact the person paying for the shipping, redoing the estimate, and getting approval before taking the item? That, or honor the original estimate?

Pretty much... yup.

In this case it sounds like there is some shenanigans being played with what "class" the cab falls under...

You can ship something under the wrong class all day long and a lot of the time they won't catch that's it mis-classified. Some carriers but not all spot check item's during terminal changes and then re-classify it correctly. I know for fact r&l and conway spot check items and bill you for the extra. i had one of my games shipped usf holland to avoid this because they dont spot check.

Send them a copy of the original estimate and your check for the amount on the estimate. Let them take it out of the estimator's paycheck.
