R.I.P.? Super Bear Arcade (Big Bear, CA)

Dean,

Was that the place you went to and posted pics of here? That place looked freaking awesome. RIP indeed :(

I gave them my information and told them to contact me if they ever decided to get rid of their Super Punch-Out!! machine. No calls.

I'm almost tempted to take a drive up and see what's going on...

That is a long drive just to find a locked buildiung and no one to talk to at the end. I was there in April 2009. Probably 1/4 to 1/3 of the games did not work at all and the ones that did most had issues with bad controls. I'm not surprised they went under. The place was a ghost town when we were there, but it was off season.

I just got off the phone with the Big Bear Chamber of Commerce and I can confirm that yes, The Super Bear is closed. They were not sure what they were doing with the inventory, however they did mention that there was another arcade "in town" called the Running Springs Arcade and they speculated that they ended up with much of the inventory. They gave me the name of a local realtor there who may know more. I called the man and he was not sure either, but he knew the owner of the Running Springs arcade was named Andrew and that he "had the number somewhere". He promised to call with that number once he had it.

Nice investigative work. Keep us posted!

(I wonder what the plans are for the old building - seems to me that's pretty valuable real-estate on the "strip"...)

When I went up there last April, there were For Sale signs everywhere and prices were very reasonable. Big Bear is filled with 2nd homes from well to do people in L.A. and Orange counties that use them part time. I suspect many fell victim to the real estate meltdown as I'm sure cabins and 2nd homes would be first to go.

I'd agree, it's a buyer's market. I can't believe how much stuff has dropped in value. The economy in CA is terrible for the average person. I say average because there are a lot of very wealthy people here who are mostly unaffected by the economy.

Thank god it's warm here.

Yeah, good thing I don't plan to move anytime soon.

I was at Super Bear arcade in this past July. Great selection of classics. There was new owner and he said he was going to remodal the place but I guess that didnt happen =-(

yep, thats the place. I've never stopped in the Running Springs Arcade, I saw some dude post about it a few years ago on the RPG forums. I think the guys who started it up are mainly pin guys, but there could be new owners now for all I know. I'll see if I can dig up the old post on RPG.

That building is actually in a prime spot in Big Bear Village, and Its a big space. It also have a 1 or 2 bedroom apt attached to the back with a kitchen and bath, for a live-in owner operator. I remember that info from when they tried to sell the building about 2 years ago for 2 million, and IIRC that did not include the inventory of games.
