There are a few games I find myself continuously going to for a "quickie" fix of classic game goodness. These games tend to be games I can only get "so far" on... games that I can get one to three games in... in a few minutes or so. They tend to be difficult yet have a "draw" to them that makes you want to come back for more and more and more...

NIBBLER - 1983 Rock-Ola

Addicted! That is what I am when it comes to this game. I don't really know why either... the whole premise of the game is so simple...yet the damn thing constantly and consistently kicks my ass. I still have not beat the default high score of 50K yet I come back for more and more and more. I've hit 40K... once.

QIX - 1981 Taito

Qix is one of the most difficult game to "play well" that I've encountered ever. Anyone can pick up the game and play... but to play well? It takes some work.

Q*BERT - 1982 Gottlieb

Q*Bert almost didn't make the list. I've gotten good enough at the game that it takes a little time for me to die, but it's still in that "few minute" range, even if just barely. It exhibits all the other qualities a quickie game require... it's fun... addicting... difficult... just plain maddening...

So what's on YOUR list? What games do you consistently walk over to or load up (in the case of MAME) to play once or twice "really quick" just before you go out...or just before a movie comes on... or what not?

I have a Tempest now, and that game definitely qualifies. A good game for me takes about 3 minutes. On the MAME cab, I like Motorace USA for a little mindless joystick based motorcycle action. I fire up Berzerk once in a while, that never takes too long. I still haven't made it past the 2nd screen on Amidar. Actually, most games fall in this category for me. I never seem to take the time to learn how to play any of them well. Donkey Kong has always been the only one I can play for more than 10 minutes or so. My longest game was 45 minutes, and I rarely have that much time to sit and play at once.

This game is quick fun and interesting. Sorta like Missle Command with spiders. I would like to play an original one sometime.

for me, i'd say mario brothers. i can usually make it to about 100k pretty quick. going beyond that, however, is a challenge..

For quick games I like SHMUPS but trying to stay on one credit haha, usually is like 4 minutes.

Also love vs super mario brothers (though I only have it on MAME)

Excitebike for me, of course.

Qix is awesome, too. I used to own a Qix - back in junior high. The local arcade had their annual Christmas Sale and I convinced my parents to buy it for me. $80.00 (yeah, i know)

I regret selling it to this day.

I think that Robotron qualifies as the ultimate "quickie" game for just about anybody. Super addicting, yet ridiculously hard.

This has been my go-to game for that sort of thing lately...

I would say Robotron 2084, however I have a really hard time just playing one game.

PPII I can play one game and leave it. Same with Paperboy, but that usually takes a little longer, I make it to Friday or so. Cheyenne is also tough enough where I usually can't clear more than 3-4 screens on one credit.

Robotron and Jungle Hunt are my lunch time games... where I can play a full game in the 3 minutes it takes to heat up my lunch.

RE: Nibbler, I love those style games for some reason, but have never actually played nibbler, just a lot of online variations.

DK3 is my current fav' quickie game. Games don't last very long at all. I also enjoy Robotron for a quick fix. Really, most of my games are quickies except DK Jr. and DK. I can play those for a little while longer.

Mr. Do!, Tempest, Sea Wolf(timed game), Captain Kid(timed game); these are the ones I don't last too long and are good enough for a quick fix. Although I'm over 100k on Mr.Do! now, so its lasting longer...
