Quick Zookeeper\Qix question

I've been through the manual about a dozen times...I have 3 boardsets doing different things.

I have a board set going 10 1000 which indicated u17 RAM failure. I've replaced all the RAM on this set including U17 and socket with no change. If I remove the 68A09E CPU I get the exact same error. Thus there is something else going on with this set.

I purchase a 'working set' from a KLOV member here. That set does nothing. I get no error..no 'flash.' That board goes 00 0000 with no video output

I have a Qix project that I grabbed the video board out of.. that board goes 11 1111

The game has a new arcade shop switcher at 5.10 at the ICs and using a known working monitor

So my question (which certainly isn't in the manual) is what the LED lights are doing after normal boot. The manual says they 'blink' when entering the self test mode

To they stay flashing? Do they flash once and go out? Do the flash once and stay on?

i just restored a zoo keeper and qix, my advise is as follows..

replace every .156 crimp pin on the harness (biggest issue on both my games)
replace every ribbon cable
upgrade the 4116 ram
replace every socket on the 4116 ram

Any hints as to the diagnostics LEDs sequence during normal boot?

Was thinking about repining it

i had a known working zk boardset that was just repaired, it wouldn't work in my cab due to a couple of the pins making bad contact. as soon as i fixed all the pins she booted right up.

I might give that a shot this weekend.

I do know I have VERY little..if an voltage drops from switcher voltage to ICs...less than .1V on the 5V and less than .3 on the 12V... the -5 was good as well

I did 'test' all the sockets for continuity from the IC to the corresponding traces...I replaced 2 questionable sockets but everything else seemed fine

I do have a 2nd and a 3rd set of data cables. I played Mr Potato head with all 3 sets of cables and boards. Basically tried every possible combination (yeah...it took a couple hours) and I got no change on any of the 3 boardsets.

I might have to suck it up and build a test bench

The last qix I worked on I swapped three different ribbon cables on it and all of them had issues. I crimped up a new cable and it worked perfect.
Im getting ready to make a few sets of these to sell, should have them done in a few days.

on my qix i have zero lights on while functioning correctly..the codes are in the manual light off = 0 and 1 = light on

I guess I'll just have to get a set up and running to figure it out.

On a side note I ordered enough shit to make 5 sets of cables We'll see if that helps

I also have new ribbon cable sets available.

There isn't a "quick ZK/Qix" question or fix.

Heh, have 30+ CPU pcbs.. All have some sort of issue. But this is what I've found when repairing them. Actually have gotten a few running for myself and members here..

Just for the CPU pcb:

Reflow header pin solder
Check the service switch. As they can become stuck on, leading to all your LEDs to be lit.
Replace most if not all socketed chips if questionable. (Not ram)
Ram, well they are 4116s.. Which run hot and fail. I've yet to mod any of my personal pcbs for better ram. But it's a good idea.
Have the led chart stapled to the inside of your game for easy reference
Make sure interlocks are working (all 3)
Check voltage, replace original ps
Header pin connectors.. Replace as many as needed.. Easy test with meter
Install a NVRAM or watch batter with blocking diode
Clean off acid damage
Replace (3) caps
Replace ribbon cables!!
Bad ram can also be a bad socket.. Or it could be another ram in front of the one that's reading bad via LEDs
Replace CPUs (2)
Burn the patched (19) rom for the coin pcb.. Toss coin pcb

Think that's it.. Good luck!

Think I got about everything on that list

I also have new ribbon cable sets available.
Just for the CPU pcb:

Reflow header pin solder - Done al all 3 sets

Check the service switch. As they can become stuck on, leading to all your LEDs to be lit. -Checked and done

Replace most if not all socketed chips if questionable. (Not ram) - Done including RAM on one set

Ram, well they are 4116s.. Which run hot and fail. I've yet to mod any of my personal pcbs for better ram. But it's a good idea. - See above

Have the led chart stapled to the inside of your game for easy reference -got i ton the game

Make sure interlocks are working (all 3) -yup
Check voltage, replace original ps -Replace with a switcher (voltage OK at ICs)

Header pin connectors.. Replace as many as needed.. Easy test with meter -Gonna repin the cables this weekend

Install a NVRAM or watch batter with blocking diode -done on original set

Clean off acid damage -none..yaaay!

Replace (3) caps -didn't do this yet..good call!

Replace ribbon cables!! -on the way!

Bad ram can also be a bad socket.. Or it could be another ram in front of the one that's
reading bad via LEDs - checked and replaced as needed

Replace CPUs (2) -yup

Burn the patched (19) rom for the coin pcb.. Toss coin pcb -done

I have a ZK with all blinking lights. All new battery pack, 4116s, ribbon cables, and rebuilt CRT. Still blinks on off on off on off...

I am guessing the .156 pins may need reflowing AND that the reset switch on the video board is stuck. Assume any momentary switch will do in that regard. what a pain this game is...

Repinning may be in my future too.
