As alot of you know, i've been layed off since Jan 3rd of this year. I finally got awarded a position i bid on, but apparently the location was incorrect on the listing. I was supposed to be working 30 minutes from home, turns out i'll be working 90 minutes from home. And that's if the traffic cooperates, since i'll be driving into Livonia Mi 4 days a week now.

My schedule looks like:
up at 4:30 am to be at work by 7:00am
get off work (if i don't have to work overtime) at 5:30 pm
arrive back home somewhere between 7- 7:30pm
shower, eat, in bed by 9 to be up at 4:30 again.

I probably won't be on mon - thurs at all, and trying to get cabinets, parts, signs, etc done on the weekends. It's going to slow me down, so if you message me i'll try and touch base with everyone when it's the weekend. Thanks, Brett

At least you are back to work Brett. The drive sucks. Maybe you can get one of those little smart cars to go back and forth. If it breaks down I can toss it in the back of my truck.

:)

Hey Brett, that is a tough drive every week. My guess is you will be literally passing my exit on the way to Livonia. I live right off of US 23 in Ann Arbor if you are coming up from Toledo- Johny Pops has been up here. If you feel like checking out that Liberator, you should swing through, I am about a mile from the exit. Or if you ever just need a place to stop off at and play a few credits, hit me up.

Those long commutes suck. I did 90 minutes each way for 6.5 years. That is if traffic cooperated. More than once it took 4+ hours each way. Start building up your CD collection and try some of the books on CD. It does help if you can control what you are listening to.

I found if there is anything that I need to get organized in the morning it helps to do it the night before. Also when I was doing it, having something to snack on in the car helped. ChexMix and Goldfish worked pretty good. Also having water in the car was a big help. It helps to focus you when you start to fade.

Good luck. Check to see if you can work 4 ten hour days and get Fridays off. I used to do that. Now I work 9 days and get every other Friday off (8 nine hour days + 1 eight hour day = 80 hours). I also ended up moving closer to work, so now my commute is about 30 minutes each way, but I only got to do that when my wife got a job about 10 minutes away from where I was working and had to drive the commute herself. It took her 2 days to realize the commute sucked and started to look for a realtor.

congrats on the job. I know commutes suck. I did it for 10.5 years...up at 5 am, leave the house at 5:45 to get to work by 7. work 10 hours then home, dinner, bed, and repeat.
Luckily we were on 4 day work weeks.
Going self employed back in 99 was one of my better decisions I've ever made.

Long commutes do kinda suck, but it beats nothing at all. Now you can look for something closer at your leisure, rather than having to panic.

When I did long runs I listened to a lot podcasts and books on disc. Podiobooks.com has a lot of stuff available, and you just donate what you think it's worth to the author. Some good, some bad, but lots of stuff.

Well, i drove all the way up there, took me 90 minutes. Then the boss asks about my safety certification and rules compliance classes. I told him i didn't have any this year yet, because i was furloughed. He gets on the pc and looks to see what the last one i had was, and notices i only had 2 of 6 for last year, and asks why. I told him i had missed 9 months last year with 3 surgeries. So then he brings up medical qualifications, and sees thier isn't one! I told him i had the clearance letter at home, i was cleared when i returned in Dec 2010 and was layed off on Jan 3rd.

So, he calls the medical dept and they claim i had a md5 form for cleared to work, but should have had an MD3 which means i had to go to a company approved doctor for medical clearance, and that i can't work till i get it. WTF! So, they called the place that schedules these, and they are supposed to try and get me in tomorrow, and the boss says he'll try to get it cleared for a return on Wed, but the girl on the phone says if i get in tomorrow, it's 5 - 7 days before i'm cleared. Great, just great. so, i'm back home after my 3 hour round trip. fuck.

Man, I totally feel your pain Brett. I'm doing the 1.5 each way now, been doing it for 3 years. Keep us posted.

i can see some people on here are being douchebags with the tags, but that's expected with some of the retards we have on here. Since they seem to want to know why anyone would care, i have people waiting on cabinets, signs, and misc parts and i don't want anyone to wonder where i went or will be slow to answer messages. Thanks to those who sincerely understand i'm trying to inform people who have pending business with me, and fuck those of you who want to hide behind some bitch ass tags.

Aw man, that stinks. Well, good luck on getting the clearance ASAP. There's nothing worse than being all set to get going on something, then paperwork getting in the way!
