Ok, so now that the crane is working I am trying to fix all it's little cosmetic flaws... I wanted to start with replacing the bulbs in the directional buttons, but I have no clue how to open the buttons to get to the bulbs!! any idea's?

The buttons are the same style as the one's in the picture below (though that's not my machine)

Squeeze the base of the microswitch holder of the button and tip the switcholder to one side and pull out. Sometimes a rocking motion is needed

The switch holder (which also has the lamp socket) just press fits (snaps in) to the button.

Thanks Ken, that's kind of what I thought, but wasn't sure and didn't want to break anything... Now off to radio shack to pick up a couple replacements since I just realized I'm completely out of bulbs...

Word of warning, some newer buttons which use a lock-tab configuration can be broken that way. I would first try turning the microswitch assembly 45 degrees CCW and see if it pulls out easily then. If it does, you'll see slots around the base of the bulb holder where the tabs go.

If not, then yeah... rock and pull.
