I have decided to start on my Pole Position mame cab again. (MAME with all original PP controls) Tonight, I'm just setting up the computer.

I have all controls working through a 3 button mouse (steering, coin-up, select for pp2,and proper shifting (Shiftermame125).

However, I cannot for the life of me map the acceleration to a mouse button. What am I missing here?

I'm guessing "Gas Analog" is the "gas/acceleration" in mame. When I try to map it, it does nothing. I can input any key on the keyboard but not the mouse button. It seems every other control will map, but not this one.

I will mention, in one of the newer releases of mame it works, but the computer I am using doesn't like that version of mame (sounds are slow and I can't get the pic to fill the screen no matter what I do with mame.ini)

I know I'm missing something simple.

Thanks, this is all that needs to be done before it all goes into the cab.

DOS MAME? MAME32? I wonder if the "gas" is looking for an input with a range like one of the directions of the mouse and not a full off/full on like a button would be?

Shiftermame. It's a re-compile to allow proper shifting with the mouse hack.

One other thing, Yeah, I know I could buy the APAC,IPAC what ever. That's not the point with this project. I also understand the issue with the accelerator being full on/off. I'm cool with that.

People have done this and I've almost got it, just need this last little bit info...

I would say it is looking for an analog input. A mouse button is just digital input, an "ON" or "OFF". It may want the type of input you get from a spinner or trackball.

Are you sure you have mouse input enabled?

If using the command line version of mame, edit your mame.ini file and search for "mouse 0" and change the 0 to 1.

If using a mame32 variant, Options > Default Game Options > Controllers > check "Enable mouse input"

Hopefully this helps :)

Yeah, I already knew that :D See my initial post.

Everything works but the "gas". Steering, coin-up, shifting work. All done with a mouse. I just can't get the damn thing to go in the older version/shiftermame. Should work though, others have done it.

So you have one of the mouse axis's wired to the steering, right?

Theres got to be an way way to get this to work... hmm...

So you have one of the mouse axis's wired to the steering, right?

Yeah, basically think of it like this. I'm trying to play PP with a mouse only. I can steer by moving the mouse left or right. I can shift, but I have to hold down the second mouse button to stay in high gear (the original shifter on PP works this way).

All I am missing is acceleration. I just want to hold down the first mouse button for that. That's what's not working.

I almost got it to work a a few minutes ago. I took off, then heard the "screech" of the tires. Then, nothing.

Once I figure this out then the guts of the mouse go into the PP cab and I can play with the original controls.

There are a few threads on here about it. Most of the people made it seem like it was nothing to do this. However, I am a complete dumbass, and have these problems :D

Did you try my suggestion?

I just played Pole Position and Button 1 is mapped to Gas. So go into Controls for this game and set button 1 to the mouse button you want to use. See if that works.

Did you try my suggestion?

Yup, sure did. Matter of fact I changed/mapped almost every damn function to the 1st mouse button (button "0")

Funny thing, after a while of pissing around with this...I could move but the "screech" of tires was also present.

I had a 2 year old temper tantrum and started messing around with all of the inputs on the menu.....I have no idea what I did, but it works now...

I will have to write down the settings in case this happens again

I have seriously messed with the input controls on THIS version of mame. It's working for now.

I have a feeling a few of you are using a newer version and didn't fully read my initial post. I stated that with a newer version the controls worked, However, I had issues with graphics (slow computer I'm using). More than likely the shifting wouldn't have worked either. I didn't get that far with the "newer" version.

Anyhow, It's working. I have no idea what I did to make it work. I'm done for the night.

Thanks for the suggestions and help. I really do appreciate it.

you have to assign a digital input to:
"P1 Pedal1 Analog Inc"
not
"P1 Pedal1 Analog"
as thats for real analog inputs

remove any assignments for Analog or Analog Dec, as well as remove all of the Pedal2 assignments (brake pedal for cockpit)

hope this helps... a quick FYI i had issues with shiftermame as well (noticed the tire screech and then no gas problem when trying to use a joystick gas pedal...) so i tried the new version mod, but you're right its running too slow/stuttery because of the mame devs ways, so i may go back to an older version for this project (note that the roms have changed over different mame versions too so make sure your rom version is right)

I dont know why I just thought of this but as another poster here mentioned the sotdown version of Pole uses an actual brake pedal. I dont recall if it was a ROM swap or just a jumper in the harness that told the board to enable the pedal though.

Heres what I'm thinking. Your running the game as though its in a sit down cab but you dont have the brake mapped to any button/input. With that input not being mapped anywhere its "all over the place" as far as the software is concerned so maybe the game is depressing the brake and stopping the car?

I dunno, its a stretch. You said you got it working by having a temper tantrum so unless you figured out what you did we will never know what the fix was.

I'm going to write down the assignments I made and then change it back to the original assignments and mark the differences.

Then I'll post what I found. It will be later tonight or tomorrow.

I'll check this also. Hopefully, that is all that is needed in my case.

if you're talking about the newer version i posted it's a cabmame build, read:
http://community.arcadeinfo.de/showthread.php?t=9555

the 131 build up now in my previous post is a regular mame build (with hi score and shifter mod, no cabmame mods) but i found old versions of cabmame so i'll repost 131 with the cabmame mods

i'm still tweaking the video modes to get full speed in the newest version or the 131 version, which seems silly with a fast computer...

as far as filling the screen, the cabmame builds have an option -cleanstretch you can set to 0 to let it fill the screen (but cleanstretch is a good option in my opinion, if you can adjust the monitor to bring it back to full screen as it doesn't make fractional pixels in the scretching

- gwarble

I had something similar happen in the past in MAME - it sounds almost like you had the gas and brake mapped to the same mouse button - when you do that, you get the screech and very little movement.
