Hi - when you fire up the game, how many clicks do you get before you hear the venerable Obi Wan? I recently had a sound chip issue on my board which was fixed, and the board was one click when turning on - but now i get three fast clicks followed by the intro May the force be with you..

Is that normal? How may do you get?

I'm not sure I even hear a click...

Are ya sure your not hearing the monitor chatter start or the marque light turn on?

I'll be working on my SW tonight...will pay a little more attention when I fire it up

The click is the speech chip resetting. The power for the speech chip is controlled by a 74C04 on the sound board. On mine, when I first got it, I had no speech at all - just repeated clicking. Turned out to be a bad gate in that chip. Replacing it fixed it. I've also seen a bad interconnect cable cause a similar problem - but reseating it fixed it. In my case, it was actually a bad chip.

I think I get one or two clicks at startup now. Don't remember, I'd have to check. It should click at least once, I'm not sure how many times a reset is called for in the self tests, etc.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks guys.

My SW sound PCB was recently serviced due to non working speech - just like Retro hacker. The "7931" chip was on the Sound board was socketed and replaced which fixed it.

I have an upright next to my cockpit (the upright is pending a trade). Whats strange is the upright fires up with one click while my cockpit fires up with three.

As suggested, i will not worry about it, just wondering why one would have different behavior than the other. One other point to note - my cockpit has upgraded speakers (JBLs). I wonder if thats a factor.

I may swap sound boards out and see if i get three clicks on the cockpit with the one click soundboard. If i do, than i know its cab related (something in the wiring / power supply maybe). Both games have updated big blues by the way.

Monster bash - its more like a pop - next time you fire it up you will hear it (and now that i mention it, you will always listen for it!).
