I just bought about 6 2-slot generic Neo Geo cabs from some kid who owned a bunch of laundrymat locations and had no idea whatsoever what he was doing. (needless to say, all the cabs were in terrible condition.)

Well, to my lovely surprise, 3 of them have 6-slot boards in them. They are dirty as hell, to which my question is being asked to this lovely community in hope there is an easy solution answer.

I get this error when I put in a cart and power on:

Does this simply mean: "Your shit is dirty, clean it." ?

I am under the impression this is the case. I could be wrong. dunno.

Tanks for da help, doods.

Did you check the dip switches? I don't know that you can force it into hardware test mode that way, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Dirty slots. Could be just plain dead slots too. I had a 4 slot that was functionally a 3 slot. Slot 1 just didn't work.

I didn't check them, no. What would be the correct config to bypass/correct this?

I don't know. On my board (a 2 slot), there's only one dip switch set down (and that's for free-play). I know that the first dip is for normal test mode, but I'm not sure which (if any) does what you are seeing.

Most slot problems are solved by cleaning. If you have more specific problems the people at the Neo forums are more knowledgable about Neo-Geo than the members here.

That is the test screen... It generally means one of 2 things... both are related - this screen comes up with the CPU can't read the program ROMs in the cartridge that's plugged into a specific slot.

1. You have dirty carts/slots
2. You have a bad chip or trace on the top board.

A more rare issue would be a gouged trace or bad chip on the bottom board, but that's unusual on a 6 slot board.

thanks for the help everyone...

All these boards are... literally... caked with dirt/dust/lint. Its real bad. I am sure a simple clean will fix these.

What is a good solution for cleaning the ports? qtip and alcohol?

I just take the boards apart and clean the top board alone.

Put it in the sink wiht hot water, diswashing soap, and a toothbrush. Scrub every square inch of the top of the board, scrub the slots, rinse, then turn upside down and pat dry.

After that I put them in the oven at 170 degrees (the lowest our gas oven will go) and let 'em dry for about 15 min or until all the water is gone from the slots.

After you put the top board in the oven, take a minute to examine the battery on the bottom board. If it shows ANY signs of leaking (fuzzy crud on the battery - even a tiny spot) then remove it from the board. The battery is used to keep clock/calendar settings, high scores, and soft dip settings. You can replace it with a 3.6v cordless phone battery and some extra wire to mount it somewhere off the board.
