Questions about Jawhn's 'new' Aliens game

You sure there is no neck glow? Did you turn out the lights and look? Sometimes depending on the monitor, you really can't see it with the lights on.

First place to start would be with a flowchart for your particular monitor chassis. Make a post in the repair section...you know there's always someone here that can help.

Yeah, pitch dark check, saw no glow... :(

Just found this, and am reading it now:
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=134818

Also, just checked the AC coming to the monitor (On the monitor side of the plug) and it's getting 129.2V.

Monitor is a 19K7602, and it has the flyback with the white knobs on it, which apparently is the crappy one. :(

Ok, I think I'm going to order a new flyback and cap kit from Bob Roberts... The part number on my chassis board is 85X0216-001E, and again, it's a WG 19K7602.

Is it safe to assume that this is what I need to order?

WG K7000 Flyback Repair Kit $28.00

Or do I not need a HOT? Or should I just replace the flyback before doing the cap kit?

First time doing this, so thanks in advance for any advice.

Order the Kit. You might not need the HOT, but if you DO, then you have to buy a $2 part and pay $8 in shipping to get it....

Then while you're waiting for that kit to arrive, go down to Frys and get these:

Lol. Those are the exact same parts I bought from Frys a few years ago. :D That iron doesn't get very hot at all... Thinking I may need a 35W one...

I never saw them, you must have been hiding them... all I saw was the Solder Gun you have.

25W is more then enough for the work you would be doing. I use a 12W for most of the stuff I do, and only use the 25W on stuff like Flybacks or other areas where there might be a large ground plane.

Not sure about the Hakko's but they are cheaper then Weller. However, if you want to spend a little extra, I would recommend the Weller.

This is the exact one I have:

here is the 12W one I have as well:

I love when other people forget stuff. :D Makes me feel better about my horrible memory.

I brought the soldering iron out first. We left it plugged in for a long time, and it didn't get hot enough, so I busted out with my BFG soldering gun for your guys'es System 2 'messing-round'. ;)

But yeah, mine's the Hakko 25W D454 model. Maybe it's broken...? It's barely used, though. Maybe I need to buy the Weller one.

make sure the tip's screwed in all the way on it. i have a radioshack one that works well but the tip occasionally unscrews; i don't know if that would affect it.

other thing, though, is the tip still pointy or rounded off? when they start to round off, they work like shit, so i end up replacing them at that point.

I will have to check... Thanks. Tip is definitely sharp, I've only 'used' it a total of 5 times, maybe? I got frustrated with how long it took, and reverted to my thermo-nuclear-bonzai gun... ;)

Small update time. Ok, I scored a free monitor from some trashed cabs I hauled away from a small op's house... Looks like a K7000, and if it works, might fit my Aliens.

See attached pics.

A: Does this look like a K7000? It had no sticker identifying it. It came out of an Operation Wolf.
B: How does one test a monitor, anyway? Is it safe to try hooking this one up to the Aliens game? Is there a FAQ somewhere I should read first, so I don't ask the same questions everyone probably asks...? Can a bad monitor ruin any other parts, or only the other way around?

I also bought a cap kit and HOT and flyback for the K7000 that's in the Aliens, but much like this 'new' monitor, I have no idea if either work. Sigh.

I don't know what that monitor is, but it will fit in your Dynamo HS-1 cabinet. The key is that it has that compact frame (more than one type of Wells Gardner monitor used that same type of compact frame, though with different chassis pans for the different models). The more common shelf-mount frames will not fit in an HS-1 cabinet. Well, they will fit but you can't get the back door on after. If you ever buy a new monitor like a Happ Vision Pro, you will need to swap the tube and chassis to one of those compact WG frames for it to fit properly in an HS-1.

By the way, some SNK/Tradewest games used the "cut-corner" HS-1 as the dedicated cabinet, most notably Ikari Warriors, which was the first to use it, and the game that the HS-1 is most associated with. If you open the control panel, there is a good chance you will see the Ikari Warriors / Victory Road / Guerrilla War pattern of holes in there. Operators usually left the old holes in place and drilled new ones, using a new CPO and plexi on top to hide the old holes and the plexi added support (if needed) for new ones.

Edit: It is definitely a former Ikari Warriors (or Victory Road or Guerrilla War):

That's why you have the weird "wrong handed" player 1 controls going on; because they ineptly adapted the Ikari Warriors layout. They should have just used all the Ikari Warriors buttons. Ikari Warriors is also a 2 button game; it just gives you the option of whether you want to use the two buttons on the left or on the right.

Double Dragon II also used an HS-1.

the monitor should hook right up. the bad monitor shouldn't ruin any parts, provided the signal wires are hooked up right.

manual link - http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Monitors/Wells Gardner K7000 Manual.pdf

per the manual, the pinout is this, looking at the board with all the pots at the bottom and the connector going vertically (near the bottom right corner of the chassis)

- hsync
- vsync
ground
key (no pin in this spot)
+h synv
+v sync
ground
blue
green
red

make sure your video signal cable is hooked up correctly there, plug the monitor into the game and see what it does. the only bad thing that could happen is that the monitor doesn't work.

Check out this site!

... Check out this site!

I tried that site, but they seem to just be a bunch of non-helpful smartasses.

Thanks Jim, for the clarification and manual link. But mostly for the peace of mind that trying this monitor will more than likely not fry anything. ;)

I'll be stoked if this free monitor powers up and works. Unlikely, but hey, you never know.

You think I'm bad? You should check out this guy!

:D Anyway... just make sure you have an Isolation transformer. Not sure if the 7000 has one built in, but if you just make it a habit of using one when testing monitors then you'll be fine.

The easiest way to test might be to set it next to another machine, disconnect everything from that game's monitor and hook it up to the one you want to test.

Or stop by on Saturday with both monitors and we'll test them.

Your link didn't work for me, but I'm guessing it was a link to me, somehow? Yeah, I said that with tongue-in-cheek humor in mind. You are the greatest asset I could dream of for having for help with these things, and all kidding aside, thank you so much for that, and putting up with me.

I did get the new ISO from Bob, and wired it in, so no more smoking, but didn't make the monitor in the Aliens cab work. So who knows.

I will test this thing tomorrow at some point. Hopefully, the free monitor works, but I seriously doubt it. (But free to find out!) And either way, I plan on cap-kitting and re-HOTing and re-flybacking the K7000 in the Aliens game at some point. It'd just be cool if I didn't have to to get the game working, ya know?

I just wasn't sure if testing an unknown monitor could harm the rest of the game, or anything, mostly. Thanks guys.
