Just a quick one

SMPS (switching mode power supply) = switcher = switching power supply are all just different terms for the same thing?

I'm reading an article on monitors that mentions "smps" and want to make sure I'm understanding it correctly.

That's true, but in a monitor it's built in, it's not exactly the same thing that you hook up to run a pcb. Also it provides different voltages in a monitor, but the monitor power supply (on board) and the 'switcher' power supply you hook up to a pcb are theoretically the same thing. Basically (as I understand it) it uses a transistor setup to switch the power on and off across a few terminals, which provides different voltages that are more stable than if it was like the old school, always on power supplies.

Thanks for your input!

So if I understand you correctly, when dealing with a monitor, smps refers to the power supply circuit on the monitor board. AC is rectified, filtered, and converted (with voltage regulators, transistors, and/or darlington transistors) to different voltages that the monitor requires?

Is this universal with our typical arcade monitors (G07, WG, Hantarex) or, like older games that use a linear power supply, do some monitors use another approach to producing the various required voltages?

As far as I know, all arcade monitor accept AC input and regulate it to DC on the chassis. However, newer monitors also isolate the AC on the chassis, while older monitors require the AC to pass thru an isolation transformer first.

I've never considered G07's to have SMPS's, but I guess you can call it that...

I don't think a G07 is a SMPS. I'm not an expert, I could be wrong.

SMPS are the ones that don't require the isolation transformer... Go7, Sanyo, K7000, K4600, K4900 are all linear power supplies. Hantarex Polo is a SMPS, Wells U2000, U5000, etc. are all SMPS.

You are correct. Older monitors use linear power supplies.....modern monitors use switching power supplies. There's several benefits (from a manufacturers standpoint) of SMPS over linears.....no external isolation transformer is needed, SMPS monitors can operate over a wide range of input voltages...most will operate fine with an input voltage of 85VAC-260VAC....where as a G-07, WG4900, etc need 120VAC (or the Sanyo's, Sharp's, Toei's that need 100VAC).....and lastly, over voltage shutdown. If a SMPS monitors developes a short, it'll shut itself down...minimizing the damage....where as a linear can keep on pumping the juice.
