Question regarding flipper buttons on side of cabinet

Well I purchased a flipper button for the side of the cabinet from Marco's and well here whats going on. Pinball is Williams HS and well the damn flipper button when I bought the machine someone had burnt it to melt where your finger would rest easy, well I did not like it anyways you know on High-Speed where you hit the flipper button and the engine rev's, put your intials in if you get high score,Etc. well it dont do that now that I put this new button in. It all worked fine until the new one was installed. What could this be? I do know the button from Marco specialty said it was for High-Speed but I think it's not theres no spring in it like the left original one has, there a deffinate different feel to it. Flipper does work, both bottom and upper flipper is fine in game play. Any ideas guys, and thanks for all the help present and past. Love this forum as it has helped me. Thanks. Jeff

The new button may not move as much as the old one and you may need to adjust the switch contacts accordingly.

I didn't put in new switches Lindsey, it was a new cab. flipper button. Marco is advertising the wrong flipper buttons for High-Speed, there flipper buttons are only 1" and I just measured the old flip button and it's 1 1/2" so I'am trying to understand as the flippers work in the game just fine, but the reving of engine and putting intials in the button just dont work and I dont understand. Please advise, thanks.

Oh... I misunderstood :)

My high speed machines are in storage but I took a look at the manual to determine where the "lane change" switches are located. There are 2 different methods that pinball manufacturers used for those switches. One is to add a second switch to the button on the side of the cabinet and the other is to add another end of stroke switch on the flipper assembly.

High Speed used the EOS switch method (according to the manual). I assumed they had the switches on the cabinet. I would clean/adjust the end of stroke switch contacts (both sets) as a first step.

Just so you understand what's happening... there are going to be 2 switches who's position will change at the end of the flipper stroke. One will be the actual EOS switch for the flipper and the other will be the "lane change" switch (called engine revving in the manual).

High speed was the last game by Williams to use series wound flipper coils. The EOS switch for the flipper will open at the end of flipper stroke and the "engine revving" switch will close.

You might have some wear in the flipper mechanisms that caused the switches to go out of adjustment. It's possible you have some other problem but I would look at that first.

I'am a newbie so forgive me when I say "whats a lane change switch"? This happened to the flipper (right side) when I changed the cab. button, before I changed it it was fine, since then can't rev the engine or put up intials with high scores it wont toggle through the alphabet like the left flipper will and left flipper rev's the engine no problems. I believe it's the button itself not being long enough as it's 1" but the old button is 1 1/2". Any more ideas? It is important to let you know that all 3 flippers work GREAT during game play this only happens as I explained in the beginning "toggling though the alphabet" and when you hit the button to get the engine to rev up. Thanks

Take a look at the switches on the cabinet. If there are 2 of them one probably needs to be adjusted. According to the manual they should be on the flipper assemblies but anything is possible. The switches may actually be on the cabinet on your game.

The "lane change" switch is the switch for stuff other than actually flipping the flippers.

When I originally said "The new switch" I meant the new button. Brain fart on my end.

IIRC, High Speed has a second switch mounted piggy back on the flipper End Of
Stroke switches. It's separated from the EOS with a plastic leaf that has a
triangle head at the end. When the flipper fires the pawl opens the EOS and
instantly closes the logic switch. This same switch performs Lane Change (c)
on other W*ll*ams games. Remove the balls, lift the field and inspect the
flipper assblies. That second switch is probably quite disfigured. The right
flipper may have another switch that feeds power up to the top left flipper.
I can't remember off-hand, and my manual ain't handy.

It's very important to note that if the EOS leaf blade contacts the logic
switch, it feeds solenoid power into the switch matrix, so make sure those
plastic separators are in good shape!

Basically what I already said :p

That last part is a good warning though...

More from RGP:

I had and fixed this problem a month ago. The above is correct and
seems to have been my problem. The switch doesn't have to be bent very
far before it can no longer make contact.

HS has no optical switches anywhere in the flipper assembly, and the EOS
switches are driven into the switch matrix.

Problems with the lane change switches on HS are easy to ignore because
there are no rollover lanes to change. But if you can't see and hear
the engine revving noise when you hit the flippers before you launch the
ball, they're broke. (Bote that the game does this randomly before
launch too, but it does it whenever you hit the flippers if things are
working.)

The upper-right flipper isn't activated by the lower-left flipper,
either. There's a double switch on the flipper button. (Power gets
daisy chained, but the ground is handled seperately, I suppose.)
The upper flipper has only an EOS switch, no lane change switch.

I suppose it's possible that something in the ROMs is hosed but this
stuff's all on the switch matrix so that seems unlikely to me.

Well I'am inspecting the cabnet flipper switches and seems the piggy back switches (left flipper cab switch)the last contact switch is barely touching when applied, it gets the upper flipper to flip but maybe not enough contact to get the engine to rev up before launching a ball or toggling through the Alphabet to put up your intials. I might have bent it back some when I was installing the flipper button, I tried to bend it back more closer but no luck. How do you adjust switches as this is something I need to do and I need to learn. I dont have any "adjustment tool". What do you use? Thanks. Jeff

Oh ya like I had mentioned before all 3 flippers work great during gameplay, just had done a rebuild on them.

Thanks Tom I'll mess with it soon as I have been busy To mess it yet, Thanks for the help. tomdotcom you have a nice set-up, I checked out your video you have and very nice pins. Was It difficult to maneuver all them pins down the hallways and through doors? Have to remove the legs and tilt the machine on end to wedge it in doorways? I'am in the process of converting our front family room(right when you walk in home) to be a gameroom, got the High-Speed in there, my son has his video game systems in there. Looking to get a pub table and stools and of course more pins and maybe one stand-up arcade game. I would prefer the garage but in the Phoenix area it gets hot and my garage has seen 120 degrees and I know the games would not last in that heat to long. I do like your set-up though, your wife like as well?

You bend from the bottom..with your fingers or the tool..can't really screw it up to be honest..

Just wanted to let you know that bending the cabinet flipper switches with my fingers this work just fine, and now you can "rev-up" and red-line the rpm's prior to launch. Thanks for all your help on this. Jeff
