I'm trying to restore my newly acquired twin racer back to something like Daytona USA or Sega Rally championship. However I'm confused about the boards needed. What are all the boards needed for Daytona? Isn't it a bit different then the other games?

For the Model 2 games I know that there's a CPU board, video board, and game rom board. But for driving do I also need the Model 2 amp, low pass amp and relay board? Are those the only parts needed? How do all those boards fit in with the filter board, ie how do the driving controls get input into the game? As far as the rom board goes, can I get something like Dynamite Cop or Virtua Fighter 2 and burn new roms for Sega Rally?

Forgive my ignorance, I've just never owned any Model 2 games.

Thanks,
Scott

well, I don't have all the answers, but I like to think I'm at least headed in the right direction...

I want to say the primary differences are in the game rom boards (obviously) and in the case of Daytona USA or any other game that supports link functionality, there's a communication board involved. all the base CPU/video hardware is the same I think. however I recall a story a couple months ago (back when I was having problems with my Daytona USA) that someone tried swapping the rom boards between a non-working Virtua Cop and a Daytona boardset, and it wouldn't load up, so maybe there's more different than we might think.

the audio hardware should all be the same, however, I can tell from personal experience that Daytona's got an extra option board on its sound card. I don't know anything else as far as what games require what.

so... maybe someone else will chime in now that there's some activity here. :) good luck.

Daytona USA - Model 2
Sega Rally Championship - Model 2A-CRX

These two games are on two different board sets. There are no compatabilities between the two.

As for your other question, what cab are you starting with? Is it a Sega cab? If so, is there anything left (wiring, boards, force feedback stuff, etc.)? If you are looking to build a Daytona or Rally from scratch, I would advise against it. It will take a ton of money and time. I know from experience, unfortunately.

Thanks for all the info so far. They were somewhat complete Sega machines. The monitors are there, one machine looks like it has the Daytona wiring intact, the other doesn't. They are also missing the control panels and pedals. Both have the mixer equalizer amp and the other power amp (838-10785) and one came with the model 1 sound board with sound board option. So I still need another sound board, and the Daytona boardset? Or maybe I can get some regular model 2a crx boards and burn the roms to Sega Rally.

Honestly, unless you can get a Daytona board cheap, it's probably not worth it. I started with a Daytona cab with everything but the main board and control panels, and I have more in it than I would have had I bought one working. However, if you want to go forward, you'll need the drive board for both sides. You'll also need to scrounge up another Model 1 sound board with the Daytona sound ROMs.

Thanks for the honest assessment. I'll probably start with the controls and go from there. I'm not a stickler for accuracy so worse comes to worst I'll get non original controls or even...console/PC controls. I've also seen good things using Nebula or even the PC version of Daytona. Not ideal, but at least it'll be something until I can get the boards.
