I have a Galaga bezel that has some flaking paint in the black areas. Does anyone know if it would be safe to fill in these areas with black spray paint? Or would it basically strip off the rest of the silkscreen once the paint hits it? Thanks!

I usually spay it in a puddle and use a small hobby brush to brush it in the spots where I need it....
Works great, won't pull up the original paint......

I thought hand painting too but wasn't sure of the results I would get. Have you ever sprayed over the existing areas?

First mask off the clear area, and paint the all of the artwork with Triple Thick Clear Coat by Krylon. Most large Wal-marts sell it.

Now that there is no risk of more flaking, after it has dried, mask off the area you want black, and spray paint it. You can paint on some more triple thick if you feel it needs it. Just don't paint black on the back of any color, it will change the color.

Hand paint. You just have to put on a couple coats. I've never sprayed over the entire thing. I think its like Tigre said, it may change the color. I wouldn't do it. Take the time, hand paint the spots you need... It will look flawless.
I've never used that Triple Thick stuff.... but from what I read it works great.

Thanks guys I think I am gonna hand paint it and then spray it with the Krylon clear. I will post my results when I finish!

I have sprayed several galaga and pacman bezels. I usually spray it focusing on the edges with no tape over the clear area. Then go back and scrape off the overspray with a flat razor blade. If needed use tape as a marker after it has dried. This will fix the black and seal the flaking paint. Just my 2 cents

Thanks for the input TonyH. Most of the missing areas are black so if I could spray them all the better. What type of paint do you use?

My favorite is ace satin black. Good flow and its never lifted the old paint. I had a pinball glass I sprayed triple thick on and it lifted the paint on the bottom. The black has always done good.

One thing I have learned about triple thick, is to put it on in multiple thin (LOL I know triple thick) coats and let it dry first.

Glass are screened with enamel inks so whether your spraying or painting as long as you use an enamel and not a solvent type of paint youll be fine.
but be warned spraying black over the back WILL change and darken all colors.
the inks are somewhat transparent and the backscreend with white and then sometime silver to blockout any addtional light so unless the Galaga bezel is backscreened silver Id go easy on it.

Puddling on touchups from the backside of a bezel will turn out flawless
if done right

Thanks Rikitiki! When you say solvent based paints, what in particular should I be looking for on the can? Any certain type of chemical name to stay away from?

Stay away from "Lacquer" based paints. The old Krylon "5 ball" cans from 5+ years ago were all lacquer (they have since reformulated to enamel based due to government regulation on their old formulas). Their primary solvent based ingredient: MEK (Methyl Ethyl Keytone). Guess what the primary ingredient in paint stripper is? MEK :( Lacquer simply means evaporation of solvent, instead of enamel which is a chemical reaction to bind the paint using an oil base instead of evaporation of a solvent.

Side note: A lot of people miss the old "No runs, no Drips, No Errors" - fast 5 minute drying Krylon, especially the #1613 Semi-Flat black. They have finally reproduced that in their new enamel based line with a similar sheen -- significantly less than a Satin but not chalky like flat. But they take a good hour to handle and must be overcoated within a certain time period, vs. lacquer that can be recoated at any time, forever

Spraying lacquer on anything enamel will cause it to blister and lift violently.

The only safe way of knowing what's in a paint is to look up the MSDS (paintdocs.com) and see what is in it.

BTW--spraying enamel over enamel can also cause blistering if not done to the manufacturer's specification (i.e. within 1 hour or after 24 hours under normal drying conditions) or flooding something with more enamel than a typical light coat can do it regardless of how dry it is. So you need to take care.

yeah what he said :D

but posting pics will also help determine best advise to give
bezels are the easiest and would still puddle it by hand
then spray the back with either white or the triple thick as suggested
for continued protection

I retouched my Galaga bezel last winter. I used Testors model enamel -- those little bottles of paint that you use on model planes and stuff. You can find them hobby stores. I had to get black, blue, green, red, and yellow for mine (I can give you the actual color numbers I used if you need them). They even had paint pens available for the black and blue colors, and I found that those worked great and were very convenient. It was time consuming, but it turned out to be a great time killer while I was stuck inside during last year's blizzard. I thought mine turned out pretty good. It was a lot cheaper than buying a new bezel, and it was more satisfying breathing new life into old artwork. Here's the link to my project: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=163264
