I'm getting blocks of color behind text. The game plays great otherwise, it's just in menus behind the text. And when you enter your name blocks follow where ever you move with the joystick and stay colored. I unhooked everything on the board and hooked it back up again, but didn't reseat any chips yet.

Any ideas?

Looks like its pulling the wrong color entry from the palette proms. Are the proms original to the board? I would start by re-seating all if the roms and proms on the BAK board. It handles character display for both monitors.

I would just shotgun replace the 6 PROMS and take ajcrm125 advice on getting rid of the blocks.

That's the smaller board? I did just lean and reseat them, no change. I've also got prob
SMS with a green tint o the right monitor I was assuming was a monitor issue but the color issues follow if I swap monitors. Related?

Well there's a risk there cuz there's at least 3 different versions of PO rom/prom combinations out there due to different board revisions. That's why I was asking if the proms were original to the board.

But you can still buy the correct ones depending on what board rev you have. Right?

I don't think so. In fact HobbyRoms contacted me asking if I had the various sets (which I don't). But its on my list of things to do.

Huh. Yeah all chips look original. So is there any way to tell hobby roms what I need by looking at what I have?

Not that I can tell. And that's assuming its just a color prom issue. Could be a bad chip in the datapath from the character ROM to the prom. Or even a bad character ROM for that matter. Are other colors off or is it just the characters?

Good to know he doesn't have all of them. I guess I just lucked out with the ones I got from him. I know I had a conversation with ELutz about different versions but this was after I placed an order with steph.

Do you know what the split is of the different revs? In other words, if their were 1000 PO pcb's what percentage would be of each rev?

I've actually got this figures out ... I think..

I learned that there are basically only two different sets of PO proms.
(...as far as I can tell... )

And that both sets are merely mirror images of each other
based on which video decoder mux was used on the board.

From the info in ajcrm125's video,
he states that the usual video decoders should be LS353's,
and that these use the "standard" color proms.

However, he speculates that in later boards, LS353 chips became harder
to source, so Nintendo used LS153's (...which do not inverse the address lines),
so that "mirrored" proms were needed.

I have since reversed the data on the "standard" color proms to work with the LS153.

I have successfully provided these "reversed" prom to another KLOV'er,
and they worked out great.

So if you have LS353 chips (located near the color proms),
you would need the "standard" color proms.

If you have the LS153 chips, you need the "reversed" proms ?

Clear as mud ?

...oh, and to give a rough estimate,
I've provided over 20 PunchOut proms over the years,
and all worked except for one set
(...which is the one I finally reversed to get working ).

So in terms of percentages, I would say the vast majority of PO boards
use the standard color proms, and likely less than 10% use the reversed proms.

So you need the "standard" proms...

I'll PM you with details..

Cheers,
Steph

Well... that's not exactly a sure thing. I've also seen boardsets where instead of using different proms due to the inverted muxes they had graphic ROMsets where every entry in the ROM was inverted data. So the double inversion would cancel each other out and the standard proms would work.

But there's only 2 prom possibilities so hey... just try one and if it doesn't work try the other. :)

I got the chips in today and swapped them out. The results are a little mixed. The bottom screen is perfect now. The top screen, at first I thought it needed adjusting.. but it still seems to be mixed up a bit. Here's some screen shots:
