Question about uploading games, "jump drive".

Were about to get a cab. built and I wanted to know how do you get the game ROMs for MAME into the computer that will be in the cab.? Do you use a "jump drive" then transfer the zip files from that, please explain. ROM world is the place to get these game ROMs right? This seems confusing to me. Thanks for all help.

It's easier (and better) to just buy the complete MAME set on disc. That way you know for sure the ROMs match the MAME version.

As for transferring, you can use a CD-DVD drive, or mount a USB port inside the coin door and use a jump drive. Or just put a wireless network card in the MAME computer, and transfer files through a router...

Well why can't I just download from this site http://www.rom-world.com/dl.php?name=MAME are they the ROMs images for the classic games I want to have in the MAME. What do you mean USB inside coin door? This is not easy as we thought, and all 3 of us are starting to think this MAME thing is confusing. For 1 what system MAME as there seems to be different ones (versions) updated every week. Where do you buy the disc's with ROMs? Why can't we download these for free from ROMworld.com. There was 4 of us building our own cabinets but the 4th guy backed-out because this MAME was to confusing, he's still using the cab. for his X-box only. Also what old computers to use? pentium 1 or is pentium 2 ok? My brother n law is the one with all the old pc' and they are 1- 2 pentiums. I really need step by step instructions to make this work, please help.

Why not use pleasuredome.org.uk ????
This is a ratio site. You MUST share back what you download or you will be shit listed.
Once you obtain the 0.135 set you can then simply update your set using clrmamepro with the update torrents they provide.

If you want to use a torrent site you can download the whole set from Mininova, do a search in the games category for Mame and you will get the whole set on one torrent (about 20 Gigs) and the whole hard drive set on a second torrent (about 104 Gigs), takes a while but not too bad if you have high speed internet.

You should get the ones you want to play. And the ones for the style monitor in the cab. Horizontal vs Verticle... Why have 4,600 games on there and you play 200 of them tops..... right?

I've found that some of the ROM files I've downloaded from Rom-World don't always work with the newest version of MAME.

What do you mean USB inside coin door?

It is very easy to buy an external USB hub that connects to your computer. You can mount it inside your coin door so you don't have to pull the game out to just to access the computer inside. It's even easier to just get a USB cable that plugs into the computer and you can plug your jump drive into the other end. Then you can just have that cable sitting where you can get to it easily.

This is not easy as we thought, and all 3 of us are starting to think this MAME thing is confusing.

MAME is actually VERY easy if you:

a) buy the roms and compatible MAME program as a complete set

http://www.mamedvds.com/

b) have a HD on your computer big enough to hold it all and a processor that can run it (Either Pentium should be fine)

c) have an IPAC or similar for your control panel to interface with your computer

http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac1.html

d) can figure out how to hook it up.

Of course, if you want to do auto-boot into MAME, custom front end programs, etc, then you'll need to do some research.

This really isn't the best place to find out how to build MAME. You should really go ask at ArcadeControls. They can answer any question you might have about building a MAME, but you can't ask about ROMs over there, so don't....
