This is the scoop and ball trough assembly under the Bluto Head?

I have actually never pulled mine out - probably should.

I'll try to get to that this week sometime and get you pics.

While you are working on this machine - make sure the two ball gates under the big loop are working correctly.

The LOOP inserts are lit and controlled by the flippers - when the ball rolls over the lit LOOP insert inlane, the corresponding LOOP insert lights up at the entrance to the big upper loop. That activates the ball gate for the corresponding side, allowing the ball to complete a full orbit (in that direction only). If thos gates aren't working correctly, the loops cannot be completed to collect animals and the ball will always fall into the pop bumpers on a loop.

Th gates are activated by a small relay coil that pulls on a long spring from under the playfield. The spring pulls the gate out of the way for 5 or 10 seconds or so.

Thanks, please do if you get a chance. Without that gate present, multiball doesnt work. I think the one way gate pushes the ball to the side which trips the multiball mode.

Anyone have a part number for said gate?

Elfyhead nailed it in the manual:

Pages 2-30 and 2-31

Parts 16,17,18,19

Here's a copy-

Did you click on the Marco Specialties link?

That may be the complete assy.

Give their cust service a call and they can help you identify the right parts.

i emailed them to see. they have the wire and the screws in stock but not the gate, lol.

Again, they may have the appropriate complete assembly, rather than the individual parts.

Keep up up to date on the progress.

Have you checked the LOOP gate function on both sides yet?

I also recommend upgrading the 7-opto widebody ball trough PCBs to the new ones from Great Lakes Modular - $60 for the pair, plug-n-ply and a vast improvement over the stock ones.

Here are the pics of my Bluto Scoop Ball Trough with the ball gate - looks just like a regular ball gate at the end of a shooter lane.

Note the final pic - there is this odd bracket that is screwed into the bottom of the playfield above the scoop trough - meant to prevent ball bounce-around or something? Do you have that piece intact?

OK - there are a pair of 7-opto PCBs on either side of the metal trough that holds the six pinballs in Popeye.

These boards are notorious for having problems, especially since they are now almost 20 years old. They will cause a host of problems with the game losing track of how many pinballs are in play and where they are.

Great Lakes Modular makes a set of superior drop-in replacement for these boards for only 60 bucks for the pair (transmitter/receiver):

DCS-TBS
WMS Widebody Trough Opto Board Set
$60.00

Symptoms of bad trough boards include spitting out more than one ball at a time to the shooter lane, failing to spit a ball to the shooter lane, failing to "notice" a drained ball, etc.

They are an excellent upgrade for any of B/W widebody games - Popeye, Judge Dredd, STTNG, IJ, etc.

jacobzking - can you do me a favor and check the main ramp on your Popeye for me?

After rebuilding the flippers (power!!!) the sometimes blast the ball up the ramp so hard the ball will fly out of the top of the ramp and end up stuck in the back, which kind of stops the gameplay.

I flipped up the mini-playfield and I may be missing a ball guide/deflector or plastic cover over the ramp.

Does your Popeye have something on the ramp to prevent this issue?

Thanks,

RussMyers
