Hi,

I was wondering...

Are there any other 19" 90-degree medium res tubes out there besides the Rauland M48AAW00X? Everything I've found about the monitors used in medium res raster games like Paperboy/Toobin/etc say they all use the M48AAW00X only, and of course that is also what is in all the medium res 19" Amplifone vector monitors.

I ask because someone on here was selling a medium res monitor that used a A48AAB13X02, but that tube is listed here as one found in some old TVs: http://www.junknet.net/donor-tvs
I am confused why a medium res tube would be used in an old TV... or if its not actually a medium res tube, why a standard phosphor stripe pitch tube would be used in a medium res arcade monitor.

Thanks.

The tube has no bearing on whether it is standard or medium res. The difference is the yoke and how it is wound. I've done several repairs of medium-res chassis using a standard-res tube and just swapping the med-res yoke onto it.

As long as both tubes have the same neck pinout (CR-23 for the tube you mentioned - same as a G07, 4900, etc), you can use it as a tube swap if you use the original med-res yoke...

Well, I realize the monitor chassis doesn't care about the resolution of the tube... it's just a big glass vacuum with phosphors painted on the inside. But, it was my understanding that medium res monitors generally come with tubes that have the much finer phosphor stripe pitch.

I guess I could rephrase my question: Are there any 19" tubes that have that fine stripe pitch besides the M48AAW00X?

Well, let's assume the the M in your tube number refers to the finer pitch you seek, as opposed to the tubes that start with A48 as are commonly seen in regular standard-res K7000's. Then you should be searching for other M48 tubes.

Use this list, go to the M48's, find the 23-compatible tubes, and you might have what you want...

Just to add......probably about half the old TV's I crack open have a "medium resolution" tube.

M designates a monitor tube. A designates a television tube. I don't know if a med-res might look better on a monitor tube, but as long as you have the yoke to swap out you should be able to use almost any tube you want.
Ed, how do you tell? Is it the "M" that determines that?

Pretty much, what kilgers said.

My experience.....most TV tubes have a much smaller/tighter dit pitch than an arcade monitor tube. The image on a TV is (usually) drastically sharper than a standard resolution arcade game (even a video game with a new monitor).

....and yes, a game like a Pac-Man will have a noticeably sharper image with most TV tubes.
