Quantum top - originally painted black or black vinyl?

Here is the top of my Quantum cabinet. I was looking at these pics and realized - it appears that the top wasn't the usual vinyl/laminated particle board, but might have been painted particle board, like the backdoor of my Toobin.

Can someone confirm if other Quantum cabinet top panels originally had laminated vinyl or were just black painted particle board? Thanks..

I'd do the vinyl no matter what was original. Atari put vinyl on the roofs of a lot of their games and it looks and feels a lot nicer than the bumpy, painted tops that I've seen on a few others.

I agree with you on the look and feel, however, when I build a cabinet for this, I'm going to stress original materials given the rarity. Actually, if I could get away with paint on particle board if it's original, it would be easier and less worries about the vinyl coming up later or something. Also, easier as I'd have to spray that front and back edge at least anyways.

Also, RustOleum oil based satin black will hold up WAY better than the original thin coat of lacquer. It's basically what I did in restoring my flaky Frogger cabinet. I think that oil based finish will hold up as long as we care about these games.

It seems to me like Atari was not too particular about whether they were consistent during a production run on the top/back pieces. Like they just cut those bits from whatever scrap or leftovers they had lying around.
