Real Progress!!

Troy just finished applying the Phoenix repro artwork to my repro cab from Brett and sent me a pic. He will spray the speaker cutout black. Also the coin door opening is a little off so hopefully the coin door trim will cover it. Time to get cranking on the space duel harness mod. I am about 3/4 done with the conversion chart then will start modding the harness.

That looks awesome. I hope for my cabinet build to be a winter project. I see that cabinet is mostly plywood? Are the inner areas painted black? I'm debating going with either vinyl or vertical grade formica so the whole inside is black. Please post more pics as you progress!

Whoa. *faints*

It is a plywood cab - nice and light. Chris Moore painted it for me and could probably better explain his process. I'll be talking to him later today and ask him to reply.

I do wanna clarify, I did not put the front art on wrong. There is no "play" in the up / down positioning. NO trimming either (other than the sides). Since its a repro cab, Im not sure if the coin door hole in the front (wood) is 1/2" too high or what. Also the hole for the speaker is slightly off. There should have been some bleed over for that stuff but they used the original films. I guess thats just how Atari did it.

Love it.

How did you trim the sides? I assume you measured and cut before taking off the backing, but how did you cut it?

Actually, its a cab from Brett and the front is screwed on. I just removed the screws, popped off the front and applied the art. Trimmed with a razor & reinstalled it :)

Cool! I was wondering if Brett did them that way.

I dont think they all are, just the ones with art that goes on the front....but he can chime in and verify..... Bills cab is Birch plywood, one of the first few Brett did. Mine is white Melamine with black vinyl on the inside which he began to offer some time after Bill got this cab. I highly suggest going the Melamine route for a full decal cab. Its prefectly smooth and makes for a nice install. The wood you have have like glass, otherwise you see everything.....

I believe the one Brett did for me is melamine, I'll have to check with him that the front screws off, but I'm pretty sure he would just use the same method for all of them.

yes, anything that gets vinyl kickplate art is made to remove the front panel, so you can install art, and screw it back on. That is interesting on the speaker and coin door opening.. i like everyone else, asumed it would be the same spacing and positioning as a black widow, or gravitar. I still have that really rough original quantum here, i need to go check it. I have a space duel here too, i can do a comparison.

I copied a gravitar, and then chris moore was a huge help copying the quantum specific stuff. Troy, if you would, please PM me some straight on shots of the coin panel, and what the measurements are to adjust it to fit the art better, thanks!

What is the weight difference between the melamine and the birch plywood?

Well, it's the difference between particle board and birch plywood. I don't know the numbers, but particle board is significantly heavier, because it's more dense than plywood. Despite the weight, I believe plywood to be stronger, less crack resistant. If particle board has any positive, it's the dimensional stability, which plywood should be ok on.

Finally finished up installing art on my cab and Bills. Mine is melamine and Bills is Birch Ply (alot lighter) His is higher as he has feet on there that are temporary & pretty high so thats why they may look different heights. Mine has the nice nylon sliders :)

Those look awesome.....

Planning to pick mine up and take it home on Saturday. Need to get my Space Duel harness modded and this is motivation for sure. :)

It's not that bad, I did it to a spare SD harness too.

I used the pinouts from Mikes Arcade as a reference. You'll have to keep track of where you map the control panel inputs and then build an adapter to the Quantum CP harness. The molex connectors are different.

Cheers :)

There was a SD harness for sale yesterday, and I missed it :(

Maybe a tempest will do??

I'm using the wiring diagrams from both the Space Duel and Quantum schematics and making a wiring chart of what needs to be changed as a guide when I actually mod the harness ("from" / "to"). That way you can also chart all of the wire colors and can see exactly where the signals are going or originating. I am using a new edge connector for the Quantum PCB and of course a different connector than the space duel for the control panel. It's then a matter of selecting which wires will be used for what function from the control panel to the quantum PCB edge connector.

I'm going to make an excel sheet chart and will share when it is finished and I verify that my harness works properly. Please don't pm me for a copy now. I will let you know when it is completed and post it on this thread. No time-frame as I am doing this in my spare time but am motivated to get it done as soon as I can. Seeing that empty Quantum cab will be great motivation.:)
