Quantum Repro Board - Post Your Progress!

But did those hours worth of researching to save a few mm in parts sizes yield more than $0.42 in savings over the listed BOM?:D 'Cuz just ordering that bastard took a couple hours of data entry, hehe. j/k, Obviously you at least saved a shipping charge from Effects Connection.

I'd love to hear your comments/comparisons on the Spaeth AVG vs. the Margolin-based ones, Clay's, and your BXAVG - now that you have a Spaeth in-hand.

Actually, yes, the poly and mylar caps were kind of expensive and so were the larger inductors so overall it did save me a few bucks. It only took me about an hour to source the alternative components, but entering the entire list did take quite a while I must admit, probably 6 to 8 hours. It is easily the largest single board that I've ever assembled. But yes, I wasn't looking forward to ordering $1 worth of parts from a separate supplier for the 1N100A diodes so there's definitely that benefit. The main reason I chose a few alternative components wasn't to save money. It was to get parts with a smaller size and better fit and in a few cases maybe more appropriate specs, but I did not change any of the base values.

I no longer have anyone else's AVG replacement to compare the BXAVG to. I only have original Atari AVG chips. I have previously sent BXAVG's to other people who have compared them directly to other AVG replacements on their machines and most of them have posted their comments. I recently shipped one out to someone who has built the Quantum board so maybe we'll hear about that one later on. I'm also planning to ship 4 more units out probably this coming Monday to a couple more guys who have built the Q-repro board so maybe in a couple of weeks we'll also hear from them regarding AVG's. These members I will let them make their own objective comparisons and, if they want to, they can post them for the rest of us to see. The way I see it with respect to the AVG replacements, I don't get a vote because I'm expected to be biased. Maybe someone will pm you their opinions on the different AVG replacements since you've indicated an interest.

Cheers,

Bill B.

Psst, your Q package came with Spaeth's ;)

Specifically, what I'm interested in; is whether or not Spaeth's design copies the flawed Margolin schematic, as most of the other TTL solutions do. It does not look to be a copy of the Cowgill AVG, that much we can ascertain.

It does not appear to be an issue with Quantum specifically, as other members have and are running the Spaeth AVG on their repro boards. But it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the Spaeth design because you designed your own and had detailed information on most others except his at the time of your BXAVG release. You also have that neat tester box you designed :001_sdrool:

Basically I just want to know if it's a Margolin-based design, and if so, can we perform the hacks outlined on your site on it? Again, only for posterity, since it should not have any effect on Quantum specifically. And even if it does and you have an opinion on that you'd like to keep quiet, that's cool. Just say if it's a Margolin-based design or not

 Psst, you are WRONG! :p I gave Bill the option of excluding any parts he did not need/want and Spaeth's AVG was one of those excluded items.

How can one tell if it is flawed? What impact does that have on what games?

I can post pictures or even send the Spaeth AVG, if someone wants to study it.

Picked up my fixed board today. Turns out it had some RAM issues. In the time I had it out for repair I bought a Tron and no longer have room for a Quantum. I'm trying to decide whether to put it in my Tempest or tuck it away.

I know Tronic was testing Quantum in a Tempest cab, has anyone else done it?

It would not be hard to do the Space Duel to Quantum Harness and just install it into a Tempest cab or just make and adaptor that converts the Tempest harness to work on the Quantum board but then there's the trackball, you will need to get a Tempest CP cut for a TB but all in all it should be an easy deal, but as for just swapping it out as you want to play doen't sound like it would be all that pratical as it's not just a board swap but it is totally possable for someone to do if they don't mind going that method. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do ;)
