Quantum PCB preorder

Just in case anyone has hopes of building a replica quantum at bargain price, i'm here to squash those thoughts immediately. To build this game as close to the original as possible, you will be spending $1800+ for a new cabinet, artwork, amplifone and all the other parts needed.

yes to keep this in perspective you have to view this much like buying a NIB game. Of course it's some assembly required but if done right it should be like brand new. With that in mind compare it to buying almost any modern day NIB game and it's actually relatively cheap. Of course to cheap asses this means nothing and they won't get why it can't be done for $1.75 shipped.

It's true it may cost $1800 BUT it won't be costing US $3000-$5000+ that some of these sellers are asking for, and expecting I might add. I wasn't looking for a "cheap" reproduction just a reasonably affordable one electronicaly updated as he's currently doing by making these new boards. And not a generic cab either as has been suggested.

If $1800 is "reasonably cheap" in your opinion for this type of game, i agree with you completely but 98% of the people here would find it ridiculous. This game is going to cost alot of money to build and it will be interesting to see how many people come back here to sell off their unfinished project cuz it ended up being way more than they bargained for. It happens here every week on projects 1/3 of the cost. setting all the banter aside, what tronic has done here is amazing and if it all works, he should be proud.

I don't expect everyone will find $1800 to be reasonable. I find it reasonable for me to spend the $1800 for a Quantum verses $5000 for the one we've all seen on Ebay. or $5400+ for Major Havoc or $4000+ overseas shipping for Inferno. Most of that 98% wouldn't spend $1000 on any of these if they could buy it from their neighbor. If you start a project like building any one of these games I mentioned without getting an idea of what it's going to cost you in the end to complete it then shame on you! Nobody buys a car without pricing it out first....

I was just thinking about this and adding up the prices for the parts that you would need for a brand new game with a vector monitor. I came up with a total of well over $2k so I think $1800 for an entirely new repro Quantum game would be very reasonable and whomever put those together would sell however many they could make.

I think it would only be $1800 if you did it all yourself, got a good deal on a non-working monitor, fixed it, etc... For someone to build one for a 'customer' and sell it and make a profit, I'd think it would be much more.

I lucked up and found a complete game, but with a very swollen (unusable) cabinet. I will have to scratch build a new cabinet, rebuild every aspect of it electronics wise, and I'll have an absurd amount of time, not to mention money in it. This and Major Havoc seemed to be the money pits of this hobby.

A question brought up by Perfidious about how well the AVG replacement created by Mark Speath works, since there was questions brought up about the arcade shop replacement working with other Atari PCBs.
He wanted to know if the AVG would hold up even at the higher levels. So I tried to get as high as I could last night and I reached level 10. Let me just say it's pretty hard to hold the camera and play Quantum at the same time. But at least you can see all the background stars and the forground objects are all there during gameplay.

Here is the video link:

This was played on a Tempest with a Millipede control panel using the Quantum to Tempest adapter and my own little makeshift harness wired to the millipede control panel.

I will try to get video tonight with the Arcadeshop version if I can.

Just to be clear my question was for ALL AVG replacement solutions out there. I was not trying to single out Mr. Spaeth in any way.

I do however know the errors with Space Duel have occurred with more than just the AVG replacement Arcadeshop sells. I would also assume all the replacement AVG solutions are based on the same or very similar designs and could all have similar results.

If I can get around to it soon enough I will try to test the AVG replacements I have (Clay Cowgill,Omar?,Arcadeshop) in my original Quantum pcb in the dedicated machine to see if I have any issues.

Yea, I understood that. That was just me stating which one I was showing the video about and Marks happened to be on the board so I threw it into the tempest to shoot the video.

I was going to test the arcadeshop version next, although that's the only other version of replacement I have access too. Otherwise I have an original AVG but I didn't think that was up for question.

Just to throw this idea out there...

You're thinking about remaking Major Havok, and there were Major Havok kits made for Tempest...

How about a modern day conversion kit: A Quantum conversion kit for Tempest? With marquee artwork, custom panel and artwork, custom sideart and Tempest->Quantum adapter?

If building the whole thing from scratch is cost prohibitive, maybe a kit like this would increase pre-orders.

Well after some thinking, the idea of the changing the solder mask color to blue doesn't look like a popular idea. So I will stick with the green mask in case anyone cares..

Bump for a new week and to anyone that might have missed it last week.

One question I have been getting alot is the total for one of each. If you want a PLA,PROM,AVG and PCB the total will be $225 for shipping anywhere in the US. If your outside the US PM me for a total.

I hope that helps.
