QIX and switching power supply - Power supply shuts off when game is on

Just got a QIX and it's dead. I have one of the Arcadeshop switcher adapters. I didn't have a power supply that lines up with it so I soldered wires from the adapter to the switching power supply. Yes, I soldered them on correctly, +5 to +5, 12 to 12, etc. For now, I have a standard AC plug wired to the switcher with a ground plug. I am plugging this into the service outlet in the QIX --- FOR NOW. It measures at 120v.

#1 - The first time I turned the game on I smelled burning and my nice HAPP power supply was dead. I think the burning was the power supply, it was dead.
#2 - So, I go and grab another power supply and test it first without the the games power plug J3 and J4 plugged into the power supply. I turn the game on and all voltages on the switcher are good.
#3 - I then turn the game off and plug J3 and J4 into the switching power supply adapter.
#4 - I turn the game on and --- NOTHING. The switching power supply is now not working. No LED. No power going out. Power going in.
#5 - I remove J3 and J4 and now the power supply is working again.

So, any ideas what's going on here? Why is the switching power supply NOT working when J3 and J4 are plugged into it?!?

It's going into over current and shutting down? Could be you have a short, and the new power supply is saving itself.

I found the short. It was on the CPU board. Something wrong with the board. Power supply doesn't shut down when I unplug the CPU board. Tried another CPU board and now the game doesn't shut down. But, still doesn't work!

Anyone have a working CPU board? :D

Does it do anything, or is it stone cold dead when you turn it on??

Qix & ZK are good games, but a pain in the ass when something goes wrong with them!!

Good luck!

Start pulling the 4116 rams and see if its one of those that are causing the short. I would pull one row at a time then power up.

One of my CPU boards plays the sound fx randomly when I turn it on. That's all it does.

This is happening again! WTF!?!?

So, I had that second CPU board, I put that in and it stopped shutting down the power supply as I mentioned above.

However, the second CPU board didn't work, so I got another from a KLOV'r here.

I put that in and now this new one is shutting down the power supply too like the first one I had was! !@$!@#!@

Is it common for these CPU boards to have shorts in them? WTF?

If anyone cares, the short on the board was caused by one of the blue electrolytic caps that went bad. Game still doesn't work!
