If you have an original QBert joystick with a damaged actuator, I have found a good repair technique:
You will need what is called an expansion (also called a well nut). Get a 1/4-20 expansion nut about an inch long from either Ace Hardware or Home Depot: http://m.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-4-in-20-tpi-x-13-16-in-Brass-Expansion-Nut-814388/204225872 . These cost about $1.
Cut off the end of the expansion nut containing the brass insert. This will leave you a rubber cylinder that presses nicely onto the joystick actuator shaft without slipping off. There is just enough clearance between the nut and switch contacts to give the joystick a good feel.
I also recommend replacing the centering bumper and o-ring with a rebuild kit: https://www.twistywristarcade.com/qbert/809-qbert-joystick-rebuild-kit.html
I expect this repair to hold up well. The new actuator may need to be replaced over time but this can be done without disassembling the joystick.
Enjoy
