Well thanks to our European Voyeur, Level 42, I was able to snag a cheap Qbert that was within 150 miles from my house back in July.

The cab had a fair amount of swelling, was very dirty, and was in terrible need of a tune up and my special touch. It had no sound, the sprites were missing and the filterboard was full of cold solder joints. Sent my power and filter boards to Riptor for a freshing up. Then I capped the 4900 monitor and replaced a sound chip on the mainboard and a surface mount chip on the soundboard at U17.

Next I tore down the cabinet to its bones and began removing the side art. *TOOK FOREVER AND SUCKED FLACCID ZEBRA SCHLONGS.* Then I began removing the old CPO. *TOOK EVEN LONGER AND I WOULDA RATHER HAD SEX WITH MAN MADE OF BROKEN GLASS* Then I removed the ill designed and wrongly placed front decal. *TOOK THE LONGEST AND I'D RATHER HAVE MY BALLS PULVERIZED WITH A BALL-PIN HAMMER ON A DIAMOND STUDDED ANVIL SMEARED WITH THE FECES OF A THOUSAND GAY YAKS*

Then I painted the CP with primer, hammered finish and a topcoat of Appliance Epoxy. Next I applied the new CPO (thanks Todd Tuckey).

Next I rebuilt the front base board with a 1x4 pine board that I cut down to the right height (3 inches or so). The original plywood piece had disintegrated when I attempted to remove it.

Removed, cleaned and polished the aluminum louvres in the back. Had to remove the light fixture to get at them.

Fixed all the gouges and scratches and filled unnecessary holes with bondo. Reattached the separated left side panel to the back panel with glue and 1 3/4" crown staples. Used a sharpened wood chisel to sheer of water damaged bubbling on lower back panel. Next rolled oil based primer and 4 coats of Oil-Based Yellow on the sides, sanding with 220 between coats. Put 2 coats of oil-based black on the front, top, base boards and back panel and door.

Shined all original bolts on the bench grinder and reinstalled them. Re-crimped a few of the control panel pins that had come loose from the molex housing or were hardwired with black tape by an op-hack. Replaced the red ball wico stick with the correct microswitch black(Thanks Killerkades) which required a severe amount of desoldering and crimping. Installed the new front decal (thanks Todd Tuckey).

Put on new Black Leather Textured T-molding (Thanks Anthony of QuarterArcade).

Wet sanded the yellow sides with 400 grit paper, followed by Turtle Wax polishing compound to take down a bit of the orange peel that rollers create. Next I wasn't happy with the painted front, so I matched the front decal lexan with a black textured vinyl I had on hand. I cut a 23 inch wide kick plate piece and installed it. Used a razor blade to expertly cut out the coin door hole.

Next I applied the side art, (wet method with soft plastic squeeqie, followed by a soft cloth misted with windex), using measurements derived from Chris25810's machine. Removed the mask just tonight.

The coindoor is currently primed and hang-drying, awaiting a coat of hammered finish and a coat of appliance epoxy. I will post a final pic when it is done and installed. Here's the progress so far:

looks great, I have Qbert project that I'll probably start working on hopefully sometime in Dec.

That's lookin' awesome, I would love to find one of those around here, what a great game.

Very nice. Did you trash the wood below the CP? Whatever adhesives Gotlieb used is the stickiest adhesive I've ever had to remove. If I had to do it again I probably would of just applied the front graphic right over the old one.

It kind of looks like my Q*bert restoration. However, I think mine may have been more trashed when I bought it. Lucky for me, someone removed the side art before I bought it.

Q-Bert is looking great. Nice restoration. How did the wet sanding work out? Is it super smooth?

I wish I could say yes to the 'super' part, but really, there is still a bit of a texture. I may finally be joining prOk's camp and using my HVLP spray gun on the next one. It looks great, but the texture is evident when scrutinized. The problem was that yellow is such a poor coverage paint. Even at 4 coats of paint, I still could see very faint ghost images of the repairs underneath in certain spots, so didn't want to wet sand too much off. The two restored ones I have seen before mine had the same texture. I actually like the texture myself, but it is obviously a bit different than the original finish, although the original finish on mine had brushstrokes, which I feel are even uglier. I think it looks great myself. The black kickplate vinyl definitely looks bet than the original painted front.

Yeah, yours and Koolmoecraig's Q*berts where my inspirations. They look really nice and I wanted mine to look as good. The wood wasn't damaged under the decal. But the adhesive on the original was much stickier than the repro. I was able to reposition the repro to get rid of the bubbles I mentioned earlier with no ill effects. Tough resto for sure.

What kind of oil based are you using? Q*bert was my first restoration that I used Oil Based on (after making the mistake of priming it with water based paint). I didn't sand my sides to the bare wood because of the COOD (Cardboard Wood). Two coats of Sherwin Williams Semi Gloss went on very smooth. There is a texture from the foam roller (I may of used a 1/4 nap roller for the first coat because there is still some nap that I thought I had gotten off). Scraped and applied the second coat with a foam roller and it's my best finish to date.

I'll have to try the wet sanding and turtle wax next time. How long did you let the paint setup before wet sanding it? Did you apply the wax by hand or a orbital polisher?

Waited 4-5 days after the last coat to wet sand and polish, both done by hand. The paint was still curing in spots, so it worked well.

Another stellar restoration, good sir. Hey wait a minute, that side art looks a tad high.

And congrats on the 11 thow zand mark as well.

Hey thanx guys. BTB, why isssssn't Coily facing forward on both side art decals anyway? It seems to fit the cab profile better that way. the one side where his head goes toward the back blows.

C'mon, n00b. You are better than this.

Im still trying to figure out why you would prime w/ white?

If resto's have taught you anything, its that with dark colors, and crazy bright colors, you ALWAYS use tinted primer. What you should have done was sand the cab, do all your repairs, prime with a tinted primer, and then paint. Yellows take 6-7 coats to really get what you want out of them. I was half ripped all through college, but managed to retain all my training info from when I used to sell paint.

I think you are nitpicking though.

It looks great.

Looks great Phet. I also agree with Jow that you are nit picking, but that is part of who you are. I am just surprised to see the thing inside without the coin door on it.

If someone can pm me the major differences between semi-gloss and oil based paint would be great.

Semi Gloss is just a sheen of Oil Based, or Latex Paint.

Wow.....my favorite part of KLOV is seeing the resto's !!!!! I dont know how you guys find the time. Maybe when I retire I can devote my time to full resto work. Great to see a Qbert revived. If I remember correctly, when he feel off the side of the maze he would mumble "piss me off" Ha

Q*bert is one of my fav games. Do you think this one is a keeper, or is it another Paperboy/Popeye?
