I picked up this Root Beer Tapper this weekend and need to remove the generic Bally sideart without damaging the Tapper art underneath. I started to peel away the top layer and noticed the vinyl was coming up but not the adhesive.

Should I continue to pull away the Bally vinyl and then remove the adhesive in a second step? If so, any suggestions on how to safely remove the adhesive without damaging the Tapper artwork?

Thanks!

I used Citristrip to remove the black paint on the cab I started with. How much adhesive is it leaving? If it's kinda thick, I would give Citristrip a shot on a tiny piece, not leaving it on too long before gently scraping off with a plastic scraper.

You could always remove the generic Bally sideart and then use the thick gel-based Goo Gone to remove the adhesive. Goo Gone won't remove any of the original artwork, so you can leave it on there long enough to get through the adhesive. I use Goo Gone to remove adhesive residue quite a bit, works very well.

My first thought was to gently heat the Bally sideart....and see if that would help. I have seen people use Citristrip in the past but only to remove paint covering sideart. The adhesive backing of the Bally art looks to be thicker than the vinyl itself, very hard and is a translucent brown in color.

I will give Citristrip and goo-gone a try this weekend if I get a chance.

Thanks!

heat gun then denatured alcohol/acetone to remove the left over residue (careful with the acetone it can be aggressive.

I replied to your other post too...

But if you want to get off the sticker gunk without removing what's underneath, use naphtha. I use this on guitars all the time to remove the gunk left by stickers. Doesn't harm the finish one bit.

Be really careful with acetone as it can dissolve the inks in the original side art.

I would stick to alcohol. Acetone is good when you don't care about what is underneath.

Edit:
Also you can try armor all or car wax and a lot of rubbing. I would be as gentle as possible.

dont use cirtustrip
and go easy on the chemicals on this
bally/midway art was horribly screened
even windex has taken gorf sideart color off.

Start with just a little heat on the bally stuff and peel gently
dont over heat or you will separate the tapper art at the same time.

When pulling peel down at angles dont pull the art out keep it close to the cab and peel without pulling

start there and report back.

EDIT:ahh WTF why cant my text be all in CAPS????

this does remind to get back on to touching up RBtapper sideart.
