Q*Bert Talk

So the 11-in-1 kit on Arcade Shop... This is just the latest version of Clay's kit right? Aside from the Q*Bert variations, how do the games play? I can see Tylz working, but the video I watched of Insector looks like it needs an 8-way joystick. KLOV says 4-way, is it playable? I can't imagine playing Curve Ball much, but can it even be done with a 4-way and two buttons? :p

Can you turn games off in the settings? Not sure I would want all of them listed like the prototype and Japanese versions.

Clearly, the merits of this thread were oversold. Where's that other thread at? :p

I can't remember how many games mine has, but I think I have the latest version of Clay's kit. You CAN turn off any games you don't want. Honestly, I never even tried to play the other stuff. I just have the Q*Bert games running on mine (well, they would be running if my cab wasn't on the fritz.) Faster Harder More Challenging Q*Bert is the bomb!

While I have 3 or 4 of clay's kits, I am sorry I dont have an answer for you. It seems every time I build up a qbert, someone wants to borrow it or buy it back. So dont have an answers on hand.

But I can give you an opinion so take it with a grain of salt...

I know that the clay kit and the jrok qbert plays the same. A jrok qbert and older version of the clay kit were both at zapcon..Which isnt the same as the older rom version I am playing with. The older rom set seem to me to play harder compare to the jrok and clay versions.

I haven't investigated why or the cause yet. Too much work here doesn't give me time to investigate if it just me or the the rom version or the hardware is just quicker.

Jrok version was sharp and clear. "I think" the video driver chip he was using but i dont know
Qbert uses transistors for video drivers. It almost impossible to make a qbert that extra sharp on the screen.
The game is fast in response. It makes the game easier to play for me.

The clay board was an early version I think. Not a 11n1. It had clays name on the pcb boards on a qbert pcb platform. They game reacted like the jrok pcb but the joystick reaction acted like my qberts do.

Maybe next z apcon we can get all three version there and have other people deny or confirm my observations..

Maybe I will burn a higher rom version and see what that does to the game play..

Just my 2 cents..

Ah hell, I just realized that I'm looking at Mike Doyle's kit, not one from Clay.

Either way, it piggybacks on a real board, it's not the jrok replacement board, so I'm not worried about emulation issues. I don't even know that the other non-Q*Bert games matter that much one way or the other, I was just curious if they were even playable. I see now that you can turn them off in the settings.

Ha! I was thinking of Mike's kit too. That's what my answer refers to.

I just fix them mainly and i am not much of player so I can not give you a good answer whether the games are playable. I think dave has a clay kit in his qbert so I will ask him this weekend..

The thing is it's so hard/expensive to find a decent Qbert around here then there is the problem keeping it running is it worth owning?

Yeah it isn't as bad as Pole Position, which I can totally see dealing with the all the hassle for a PP.

Phet if you had to choose which to keep PP cockpit or Qbert, which would it be?

That's a toughie. I choose not to answer your query.

2 and a half years since the last post and this is still the best damned Q*bert thread KLOV has to offer. Thanks for the memories.

Nice bump Phet! Hope you are enjoying the holiday.

I am enjoying it Uncle Tiggly. What better way to get in the mood than to bump the thread that started it all? And by 'all' I mean everything great that has ever happened to me. I wish I lived in the world this thread has created.

After many hours of blissful stimulation (reading back), I can attest that Phet's (thread) is longer. Neither is painful which is always a plus.
