Ok I'm FINALLY getting ready to bring this cabinet restoration part to a close in the coming week. Over the summer I did some more work on prepping the cabinet for primer and paint and finally yesterday I got a 2 coats of oil based primer sprayed on. I know this has been covered before so I hate to bring it up again, but I've seen different opinions on Q*Bert yellow. I was unable to get a mix of oil based to match the yellow. I wanted to use oil base because of how Q*Bert MDF cabs are so prone to swelling, but even Sherwin Williams has discontinued the yellow coloring for oils. Oils are certainly a dieing breed and I know in Cali you can't even get them anymore. What I did was buy safety yellow since that was as close as I was able to find in oil, but I've heard some say never use it and others say it works. If I wanted to, would I be safe to return the safety yellow and have them match a latex paint instead? Do I even dare put latex paint over the oil primer? I still need to sand down a few spots before hitting it with a final coat of primer and then I'll be adding the yellow. Just thought I'd get a few more opinions. Thanks all. I look forward to sharing the results soon. Having access to an HVLP sprayer is really helping the process.

You should be okay putting latex over an oil based primer. Just be sure any areas the haven't been primed (especially any t-molding areas) are well masked off. You don't want any latex paint seeping into the wood (but you know that already).

Just make sure you finely sand that entire surface. Don't sand through the primer, just hit it with fine paper to get the surface flat, but more importantly scuff the entire surface so the finish has something to bite to.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm definitely thinking of using latex if I can get a closer match than safety yellow.
