There were some other incomplete or misleading posts, so HERE YOU GO.... my experience rebuilding a qbert joystick with a new centering grommet. Here's the underside of the rebuilt joystick:

Replace these parts:

- Brown thing is a standard gottlieb rebound rubber (marco 38-1110)
- White thing is a 5/16" pinball rubber (marco 38-0516)
- Originally held by tight clip that got trashed during removal. Replace with a 1/4" e-clip (marco 20-8712-25).

Works awesome, wish I had done this years ago.

Hey, cool... I rebuilt mine with a new white rubber, but didn't realize the dried out brown one was a pinball rubber.

Will have to keep this in mind next time I make a Marco order.

Is there no restrictor plate in a Q*Bert joystick? I figured that there'd be a diagonally mounted 4-way restrictor in there.

Yes -- there's a plastic plate on the bottom that holds the microswitches and acts as a restrictor. It's removed for this photo because I was trying to show the centering rubber that needed replacing, not the entire assembly.

Also absent is the black plastic sleeve on the end of the joystick shaft that actuates the microswitches. This must be removed to disassemble the stick. Just twist and pull hard. It seems to be held by friction and was pretty tight.

Anyone know what can be used to replace that? I pretty much screwed up the one on my joystick trying to get it off.

Just wanted to follow-up and say I bought these parts and they work great! Just need to figure out what to do about the one microswitch that doesn't contact 100% (already tried swapping out the old, worn micro -- no change). This was an issue I had before the rebuild and is unrelated.

And in the spirit of paying it forward, I will send a kit free to the first person to name the woman in my avatar (hint: Google "Evan Longoria's girlfriend") and post a safe for work pic of her. If no one replies to this thread I'll open it up to folks in the general forum. US residents only.

Weeeeeelllllllllllllllllll......

Holy Necro Bump LOL

It's been very topical. JRoK board out and people looking to do Gottlieb projects. Stumbled across a box of original Q*bert sticks (that had been sitting since 1985'ish) and they went like wildfire for some decent money. Last one is loose and spins.
