Q*Bert - Is this too far gone?

Hmm well wood swell can vary a lot in severity and effects, and it does look on second glance like the molding tracks probably got a lot of primer and paint in them, so it could come out nice. And molding almost never really sits right when you replace it even in ideal situations. Can't be too picky.

Bit of an update on the Q*Bert..

- New T-molding
- Removed all CPO and replaced with arcadeshop one (very nice quality)
- Added the artwork under the CPO (again arcadeshop)
- Broke down joystick and rebuilt. Used electric drill to clean the rusty shaft (ahem)
- Same technique used to shine the previously rusty bolts. Really amazes me to see how you can shine these things up like new.

Currently working on making a new low voltage section of the harness. The rest of it was pretty hacked too. Used a JAMMA as a base (will eventually replace when full harness' become available...) Pretty messy, it's two pins short (GND & +5V), so these are attached directly to the PCB

Fired it up and.... It works! - well the power and display section anyway. Lots more work before this is fully opperational. Roll on somebody making a complete harness solution...

Thanks to qbass187 for the PCB...

Can't tell in the pic, did you use the leather texture molding?

Nice work, you're progressing now in leaps.

Yep, leather t-molding. The t-molding channel was pretty central all round, so I was lucky considering the amount I ground of the sides.

The 2K paint turned out well. VERY hard with great coverage. I'll use this on all future restores.

Been a while since an update... Q*Bert is now finished. :D

Ended up making half the wiring harness for this thing. Bit of a nightmare to be honest. Turned out fine though..

A couple of thanks...

Great work man. Mine was probably 20% of the work that one was and it was a total PIA!!!

Congrats and enjoy. Q is on of the very few that I am certain will always remain in my gameroom.

Insane restoration... you took a cab that 98 of 100 of us would have shit-canned and turned it in to a beautiful machine.

BRAVO!

I bow to your sanding expertise.

You boys make me blush. It's certainly not perfect, but solid and presentable. I've seen many better restores on here, than my effort.

It is nice though to have saved this. Just goes to show, with time, elbow grease, gallons of wood hardener, loads of paint, primer, sanding pads and a long list of expensive imported spare parts, you can polish a turd ;)

Absolutely unbelievable. This just goes to show that where there's a will, there's a way to save just about any game. My brain hurts trying to think of the actual process so I'll just call it what it looks like and say that this is a great example of magic :D

Thats a real nice job you did on that cab. Having done one myself I know how much trouble they can be. It seems you only have to THINK about water and it swells up.
Your dedication to fixing that cab instead of scraping it is to be admired.
