Hey guys,
I'm working on my Q*bert restore and I was hoping to get some input on something.

I stripped the CP down top the metal and I'm not sure if I should prime it White, Paint it black or just leave it as is!

Any thoughts?

Good to see your restore is coming along nicely! I would definately get some primer on it. As for color, it's only going to be seen from the back side, probably black?

Thanks Jason, Wait until you see the pics you won't believe it's the same cab you had sitting in your garage!

Yeah, I was thinking white only because 1) I have White and 2) I've always heard that white is the better primer for colorful CPOs as it will make them appear brighter.

Ah, that's something I never even considered about the color of the primer.

Shoot me some pics when you have a minute. I would love to see the progress with the cab.

Prime. I like the light grey Rustoleum primer. Paint it black around the joystick holes, button holes and any edges. That way you won't a problem if the overlay doesn't cover every bit of metal or if it is slightly misaligned.

You want to make sure you atleast paint the edges on both sides of the panel black. Some cpos do not cover the whole control panel and also the holes always don't match up like you would like them two so you will be forced to shift the cpo in one of the directions leaving a little metal showing along the edge.

I paint all mine black and the art looks bright to me.

I did mine a few months ago, and painted both sides black. It looks great. A couple of other tips:

1) after you paint, let it dry a few days (maybe more) to let the paint take care of outgassing
2) go to the hardware store and get some of that self-adhesive foam weatherstripping tape...put it along the back side of the top edge that touches the bezel (originals had this, and my local home depot had a nice selection of good matches)

I tried black at first, didn't like it. I could see black Rorschach patterns through the cpo in the yellow areas. I wound up using white spray rustoleum, then hand painting the edges and around the joystick with black. It looked great.

I guess I didn't get that since I applied NOS overlays and they are thicker than the repros.

The one I'm using is allegedly NOS and appears to be pretty thick with a rough-ish texture to it. it looks really nice...which is why I want to make sure before I apply it.
