Hi;
Getting my Q 100% and decided on doing the full P/S rebuild, going to remove the switcher that came with the game......
Reasons: 1- sound has no volume and 2- the knocker is DOA.
I checked and the +30v line is about 3v.
I have no problem finding the 30v components but the 5+ transistor, I cannot cross the 5879, I pulled the spec sheet and a 5880 would be a better replacement but cannot locate that either.
I checked Mouser, Newark and Digikey - NG.
I also checked the forums but all the old posts show that Mouser still had them available but that was 3+ years ago..
Thanks in advance
Jeff

EXCELLENT!
You just saved me mega time setting up a Mouser order!
Much appreciated, payment sent, waiting for the door bell to ring....................................................................................................

Good to see Mike has it sorted

Thanks, that's a great site, have it bookmarked now!

That is the most inclusive kit I ever purchased!

Not only did it include the mica insulators but also a little squeeze thing of the heat sink compound!

Power supply has been rebuilt - switcher has been removed - harness has been restored to original glory (with Trifurcon pins!) and new Molex connectors....

I got sound!
I got knocker!

And I got LOTSA HEAT!

Holy cow, that heatsink is too hot to touch! Should I install a fan on that baby before it BBQs' the cab???

Anyway, thanks for an excellent kit, much appreciated and saved me mucho time.

BTW, the sounds are excellent but the "voice" is a little low, is one of the 2 pots on the sound PCB responsible for that? I don't want to mess with anything now that I have the game 100%without knowing for sure what I am doing.

One pot is volume, and the other is balance between digital and analogue IIRC

If you hear crackling on the speaker when you turn them, they need replacing

All the best

There are two 100 turn pots on the top right of the board. These change the pitch of the voice and sounds.
The pots referenced above are the 100Ω ones on the left side.

The heat is normal, not much you can do with it. I did some tests with a fan and it didnt help squat. You would be better off mounting a fan in the bottom to push fresh air in which will force the heat out the top louvers quicker.

Old fashioned analog power supplies (non-switchers) are horribly inefficient and use brute force to regulate the output. That translates into heat. How much heat depends on how much voltage needs to be dropped. The higher the input voltage to the transistor the more heat it dissipates to give you that regulated output.

The only ways around the heat would be larger heatsinks, a redesign with lower input voltages or more efficient transistors (think MOSFET), or forced air cooling.

Keep in mind, I'm not an electrical engineer... They may cringe at my explanations. :)

Thanks for the input - this is my first Gottlieb restoration.....

I think that the best solution (prevention) would be the installation of a fan on the lower section of the cab, (there is already a hole there) forcing cooler air into the base of the cab and thereby forcing the warmer air out through the upper vent louvers.

Thanks for the advice
Jeff
