Putting Switching Power Supply in Star Wars/Pole Position Cockpits

ANyone know if this is possible? If so, anyone have any help they can give me on them? LOL

In my Gorf, I put an old computer PS in there. I actually needed an older one for the -5V rail. But it works perfectly - clean as a whistle. Nice built in fan, plenty of amps. It fixed a a few problems I was having with the original PS.

And it was just a matter of - OK if this wire came from the 12V rail of the original PS, that's where it goes on the new switcher. It couldn't have been more straightforward of a conversion.

Thanks guys for the help so far....anything weird about doing this with Star Wars because of the vector or no

You can not totally eliminate the original supply on a vector. You can use a beefy switcher for the 5VDC/12VDC/-5VDC rails. The original power supply also outputs 22VDC and -22VDC. These voltages are used in the video output section of the motherboard....very much needed.

Depends on the vector game, I suppose. For example, Asteroids expects 36VAC; it generated the +/- DC voltages for video amps onboards (+/- 12, in this case, I believe).

I'm pretty sure those Atari vectors that take +/-22 then regulate it down to +/-15VDC; so if one could find a switcher that supplied anything in the +/- 18-24V range, it should work. Probably isn't going to be cheap, though.

For the record, I'm a fan of repairing original linear power supplies in all but a few pathological cases.

You don't need to put a switcher in Star Wars. The original power supply setup is fine - just fix it.

Pole Position, on the other hand, needs all the help it can get. You can definitely put a switcher in there. I've converted a sitdown Pole Position to run off a 250 watt AT style computer power supply, and it was rock solid reliable. You also need to do the other upgrades to it too, like a new power harness to bypass the edge connector.
