OK, I've looked through a bunch of threads on here and gotten a general idea on what caps to get. But I have a few questions before I create some projects on their site and place an order. I'm looking at Nichicon caps.

1: I've read many times that it's important to use hi-temp caps when replacing hi-temp caps, but many use hi-temp cap to replace a standard caps. Is there any real benefit to using a hi-temp cap where a standard cap is called for?

2: Mouser has multiple "series" of caps for the same value. For example:

  • PW Series: Miniature Sized, Low Impedance, High Reliability For Switching Power Supplies
  • KT Series: For General Audio Equipment, Wide Temperature Range
  • ST Series: 7mmL, Wide Temperature Range
In many cases there is a cost difference. Is there a specific series I should look to purchase?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

could you give us some examples of high temp caps on common boards?

Most of the common (older) monitors didn't really specify high-temp caps. You don't start seeing that specified until newer monitors. I recently posted a cap kit list I made for a K7501, and it shows quite a few high-temp caps:

Typically, if you are replacing caps that are very close to high-heat areas like power resistors, you probably want to put high-temp caps there, especially if they have failed already...
