I've been reading a lot of threads of "Deals Gone Bad" with newer members...

What's a solution? Why is it happening?

Is it a new member scamming?
An experienced member that is too lazy to ship right away?
The want for a part that you're willing to take a risk?
Impatient people?
No good communication?

I see "red flags" stated that were popped up. What are they?

Thoughts....ideas?

I would say all of the above, except maybe an experience member to lazy to ship. It took 2 months to finish a deal with an experienced member here. I have paid another member 2 weeks ago and still waiting for a tracking number. You do expect to get same or next day ship out with a business, but most of us here are not one. Communication, however, is the key.

The flood gates are open and many new people are joining the group. Unfortunately this means we will get new scammers as well as new guys who mean well but overextend themselves resulting in deals going bad.

A few years ago the software used here had many glitches and it was difficult to get an account on KLOV. We had virtually no problems back then, we were smaller and the people here were more dedicated in my opinion. The down side was a complete lack of diversity. This was essentially a video games from 1979 to 1983 community only. Personally I feel the growth and diversity outweigh the increased number of bad deals.

Yeah I noticed the other day in some threads there were two people that joined before 2008 , and the rest , 12 people all joined 2011 & 2012 .

This place has completely changed . Its not really fun anymore . All the old school members have almost all left and its a whole new crowd . Its pretty boring here now .

Way to heap the blame onto new members, as if it's our fault for not having discovered the site earlier. If you know the secret recipe for "fun" then try re-injecting it into the community instead of finger-pointing.

For my part I think this is a great place, and will continue to do my part trying to learn and contribute, act as an adult, and TRY not to be discouraged by posts like this. :(

I joined in 2011, so I'm clearly part of the problem. However, don't dispair. I'm starting to transistion my tech posts to Aussie Arcade, so soon you'll have your old KLOV back.

Well put. There have been people with older join dates and high post counts that have caused drama and bad deals here as well. Its just growing pains.

In my opinoin, this is still the best forum out there for tech support,Arcade info, and hard to find parts there is.Some bad apples are always invitable. But it is still a class act forum. Most people on here are fair and honest.

Anybody that was here before the software change will agree with me and all new members won't agree but its the truth .

There was rarely bad deals back then . 99% of the members you could trust .

I don't think ScumBum was taking a shot at new members. I think it was more aimed at the board as a whole, and how it's run/moderated.

3-4 years ago....this place was more of a free for all.....dirty jokes, homo-innuendo, pranks, quote hacking......basically, adolescent humor ruled (which, I found quite enjoyable.....hey, I think there's a little Bevis & Butthead in all of us). The owner wanted a more inviting site....and "family friendly". So, we went from "R" rated (boarding on NC-17 at times) to a tamer PG. Some think....now the fun is gone. I wouldn't go that far, but the site is very different....now compared to "back then". A lot of the old timers who liked the "fun" site left......thus, the old timers that are left....miss the "fun" site.

KLOV is definately a different site, now compared to 3-4 years ago. I don't think one is better than the other.......just different. If I had to pick one.....I'd go with the old "dirty" site....but, as I stated.....I like potty humor. This has nothing to do with the "new guys".

I don't completely agree with Edward's assessment of why the owner forced the change. It is true that when I joined adolescent humor ruled. It was fun and enjoyable. However, about four years ago the adolescent humor degraded into personal attacks. It became a horrible place for newbs to come to and many old timers left because they assumed that it was descending into the RGVAC realm. To top it off the administrators and moderators were deleting these personal attack posts as quickly as they could in addition to temp banning the posters. This created a situation where the attackers could claim that they were being persecuted by the admins and moderators. Unfortunately many occasional users believed the people causing the problems and the mods lost even more respect/control. Eventually it got so bad that the mods took a hard line in order to clean up this place and more people left.

Fortunately few people with actual technical help left, though many who stayed began posting much less frequently.

Ive been on other forums that won't allow newbs to use buy/sell/trade until after they cross a threshold like 50 or 100 posts. Would allow time to establish the "tighter community" bond

In 07 i joined byoac and after getting bored with mame I sold my Mame cab and went strickly original dedicated cabs. That's when i joined KLOV. I didn't use it much until this past year, I was on coinopspace alot but they don't have as many collectors as KLOV. As my collection grew i needed more tech advice on games, and I got hooked on the quick responses and and just the faster pace in comparison. I like klov, there are a few rotten apples but for the most part people try to help each other out. Usually whenever i need advice or am searching for a part i get quick responses. And for that i am greatful. I am far from done with my collecting (don't tell the wife). I have a vision of what i want my home arcade to be and hopefully KLOV and all the fellow collectors will be here to help me along the way.

I do agree with this, also. Personal attacks became an almost daily occurrence.....and not just a jab here-and-there.....knock down-drag out fights. And a new poster definately had to have thick skin.

But to my original post in this thread....I don't think ScumBum was talking about new posters making this site not fun. I think he misses the potty humor:D.

There's an idea here...I am not certain about exactly how this works here but I do not think there is a minimum post count to post a FS threads. The Neo Geo forums have that, I do not know if it really works but it's an idea if things start to really unravel here.
A personal beef I have is that to some degree, KLOV has become an "arcade classifieds" concept where "members" that add absolutley nothing to this forum group but post FS threads constantly. I will pick on Jeff Rothe in particular, since for years his signature read something like "find a better arcade forum" kinda thing, until I brought that up several months ago. Sorry to call you out Jeff, I know he will not defend himself, because he never posts anything but FS threads and that's it.
A delicate balance but I still get annoyed reading multiple FS posts from members that do not ever add anything at all to this site, nothing. No input on repairs, no banter on the general forum, hell, even posts about touchy political subjects. Some "members" do absolutley nothing but unload arcade stuff here. I would be very interested in hearing what McLemore has to say about this particular subject....

I disagree with you here. I feel that guys coming here and selling or buying arcade parts are much more a part of the community than the guys who just post in the CAAA or Political forums. We have guys who never post outside those areas that aren't even related to arcade games. How in the hell are they part of the community?

Those people ARE the community. There's more to life than arcade games. There's lots of stuff to discuss besides arcade stuff. This is the only place I know of personally, where "men of a ceratin age" can discuss many different subjects. Individuals that do nothing but post stuff to sell ad much less to this "community" than members that stalk the political forums. While I often do not agree with their opinions, it adds color to this community and some degree of comradare. We can agree to disagree, here...

Yeah obviously all new members aren't bad . I'm saying in general this forum has completely changed . Its no longer really any fun , which it was , and the majority it seems are new posters that joined like a year ago . I haven't been busy in the for sale section for awhile but I remember the last thing you wanted to do was burn somebody because the arcade Mob would come after you . It was a really tight nit community and if you burned someone you would be screwed because you'd have the whole forum after you . Obviously all new members aren't bad but also all of them aren't good because there was rarely problems in the for sale section . Occasionally there would be , but the person would be called out and burned at the stake by an angry arcade Mob .

Back then it was like hanging out with friends at an arcade , now its like hanging out at Grandmas house .

I do remember the way things used to be, a bit unruly, out of control stuff flying everywhere, including insults, profanity. It was kinda fun and lots of these people are still here but the feeling is different.
My point is that when there are multiple members that do not do anything but FS threads, they make this place feel kinda "cold" to me. They are not people that collect arcade games and talk about life and fixing things and THEN sell stuff along with that. When there's a bunch of members that never say anything personal at all, I mean nothing, it makes this place feel hard and cold and invites the type of things the OP was originally discussing here. Again, I would really like to hear what Mac has to say, it's his ball of rubber bands here, he gets the first and last say, as he should. Evey once in a while a strong hand will direct things on these forums and I think most of it has been for the better. But I would like this minimum post concept to be considered, it may really slow the bad deals down. If a guy has nothing to ad about anything here, with a mimimum post count, they can't just use this forum as their classified ad place, like the recycler or CL or something banal like that.
