Wouldn't anything that is stuck to another be a laminate of SOME kind? I agree it has a plastic smell when you sand it and as far as I know you can't "paint" plastic onto something, I believe it would have to be "Laminated"?

Besides my grandpa is from Japan and used to be a Nintendo Cabinet Laminator.

In this context, "a laminate" means high-pressure laminate (Formica and Wilsonart are popular brands). At the very least it means something that comes in sheet form. It isn't even possible that the Nintendo finish was ever in sheet form, as it is not flexible enough, i.e., you couldn't put it on a roll because it would break, and it tears too easily. It would be similar to trying to have paint in a sheet form. Additionally, there is not a trace of adhesive holding the finish to the wood on a Nintendo cabinet. It had to have been applied as a liquid.

Again:

In liquid form, both urea and melamine resins are also used as baked-enamel coatings

Melamine resin is a thermosetting plastic, so you can "paint" plastic onto something.

Easier restore w/ black only and smaller sideart...

I dunno about that...

My Punch-Out!! was nine coats of automotive lacquer wet sanded in-between with the finish coat rubbed out to a satin lustre with steel wool. Took nearly two weeks.

DKJR was two coats of Navel acrylic latex and a foam roller. Took two hours :)

I thought this was a choice between which cab to restore....not a in-depth discussion on whether the cabs were laminated or not. Restore them both.

I would go with Punch Out. Only played it a few times but its a great game. I love Mike Tyson's Punch Out on the NES and I love the speech on Punch Out. Plus, I have already had a DK Jr.

I wasn't that hardcore when I restored my old Punch Out ;). 2 coats of rustoleum satin black and called it a day :)

I imagine it would take a lot of work to duplicate the appearance of the original PO finish, because it is perfectly smooth (not a hint of texture / orange peel). However, they didn't spend a lot of time prepping the plywood underneath it, so you can see the slight irregularities in the surface of the plywood through it (I suppose you could call it the "grain" of the plywood). Had they prepped the plywood surface with e.g. grain filler and block sanding, the black finish could have been mistaken for the finish on an expensive grand piano. If you look at this picture from 8-Bit's PO restore:

You can see the reflection of the car in the finish, and that's after it has been beat to hell over the past ~25 years. Imagine what these machines looked like brand new.

Good to see you chime in....gotta represent with that PO cab. :p

Thanks, Damon!!!

Here are some pics... hard to see w/o sunlight, but the finish is silky smooth :)

Exactly what I used and it looks great.

I did about 6 or 7 thin coats of oil based rustoleum with a foam roller. It looks fantastic. It took forever to do. It looks really good but doesn't quite have that "laminate" look. It just looks good.

BTW - Been playing a lot of Punch-Out in the last day. Actually, I rejuve'd my monitors and the game looks even better. I am starting to get to the point where I feel like I have a fighting chance against kid quick. I can beat him maybe 40% of the time. But I have yet to beat Pizza Pasta. Tough game! Love these characters.

DK Jr. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy both games, but I don't get very far with PO after I win the title lol.
